"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Yup, it's real. How did it get into production with

  • a flattened back tire with central hub very off-center,
  • right pedal on the left side, and very far below the cyclist's leg,
  • chain routing defying common sense,
  • and a disjointed left glass?

At least the socks seem to be classic low-res stitch art likely by humans...

It boggles my mind how multiple people went "Yeah, this is fine" for this trainwreck to become a reality.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 25 points 1 month ago

It was probably more like "everything in this list of 87 things looks fine."

I read "Poorly Made in China by Paul Midler. In it, he recounts many of his stories working with manufacturers in China. In one part, he talks about a time he just drove off the highway to a random factory to see what they made. They were very accommodating and welcomed him in. They happily showed him their wares and even gave him some samples hoping to maybe get another American buyer.

They made little figurines of Santa that said Feliz Navidad. They didn't even know what it said and assumed it was English when presenting it to the author who is American. They probably got the molds from somewhere, found a supplier of raw materials, got some buyers, and went to town. At no point did they know or even care what it was they were making.

With that context, it's easy to see how this kind of thing can happen.

It got purchased, didn't it?

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Zero people. The product being sold is themed socks. How do we sell more themed socks? Smash together words, generate an image, see if that sells. Yes? Great. No? Smash together words, generate an image, see if that sells. Repeat again and again.

It doesn't matter what the image is, if it sells it's successful.

Yeah, but who is dumb enough to buy a product with that slop on the box? What's the kind of person falling for this junk? I mean it's literal gutter trash.

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

The answer is anybody because no one is looking at the box art. People but things online all the time just to find out it's the wrong size or the wrong color or doesn't have the feature they thought.

Nobody sees this and immediately thinks AI photo. They think, I want to see the socks, which they do and buy it. Maybe they see this AI logo, but it doesn't register consciously.

It is like the
the trick with language

Where you only read "the" once.

[–] thethunderwolf@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I read the "the" twice. Do people usually miss that?

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Some people do. There are endless little language tricks that some people will catch and others won't. Similarly there are endless visual tricks that some people will catch and others won't.

If you're looking for a trick, it'll be easier to spot. Any image posted to the "Fuck AI" community is going to have people looking at it. But put this online with 20 other socks for sale or at the checkout of a store and no one (realistically almost no one) is going to catch it.

Who?!

OP's family members.

[–] SacralPlexus@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

This is unrelated but you’ve made such a great analogy for evolution by natural selection.

I wonder how much it would cost to have an actual artist make a shitty cartoon image for their logo. $100?

E: there's a bunch of ads on Fiverr for like $10-50

[–] vodka@feddit.org 30 points 1 month ago (1 children)

From what I've seen recently, most of those fiverr gigs are scams that just gets you AI slop now...

The actual artists have just been completely pushed away by an abundance of AI slop scammers.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

Wonder where you got that. The ones I looked at had portfolios that didn't look like anything like AI.

E: WTF am I being downvoted for explaining what I saw?

[–] diabetic_porcupine@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah you looked at their portfolios. Now hire one and see if what you get matches their portfolio.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If they did that they'd probably get a lot of bad reviews and be reported to the platform.

[–] vodka@feddit.org 4 points 1 month ago

I've seen it a bunch, especially now around Christmas where people have bought custom artworks from seemingly legit sellers (plenty of positive reviews and relatively old accounts) and then just getting AI slop.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 15 points 1 month ago

It's the "please kill me" eyes on every bit of small business AI slop that gets me.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Life about to get even more cringe

[–] Vinylraupe@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 month ago

Genuinely made my day 🤣🤣

[–] LostWanderer@fedia.io 12 points 1 month ago

LMAO What a wretched thing to have been allowed to exist...This is why I laugh at AIBros that think AI can create art.

[–] RaccoonBall@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago

Our family does secret santa, and my person bought me nothing but AI gen shirts.

And not "hmm I wonder if this was generated" but like "wtf is that deformed thing there"

[–] riskable@programming.dev 8 points 1 month ago

They can't even AI right!

That should've been a pelican on that bicycle.

4 is standard for cartoons but the knuckles look weird.

[–] sausager@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hate to break it to you but those socks started being made by machines decades ago.

Source - I'm assuming.

[–] Transform2942@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

I think OP means that the "pixel art" was generated by humans, not that the socks were handmade
