Change my mind: Literally zero people want Greenland to be part of the US except Donald Trump and the people who have trained themselves to always agree with Donald Trump.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 58 points 1 week ago (2 children)

The people who have trained Donald Trump to agree with them. They want oil, minerals, land, etc.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 15 points 1 week ago

And then not have the capacity to refine the minerals so they have to send the stuff to China for processing

They don't even have a fucking reason. Oh, it is an important strategic location? Good thing we already have a base there!

[–] voodooattack@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)
  • Venezuela: oil, because renewables are becoming more expensive due to all of the raw materials going into AI-related tech and the US needs a backup plan if shit hits the fan and their bets don’t pan out
  • Greenland: rare Earth metals, because they are the strategic bottleneck amongst said materials, and China stopped exploring them recently and I guess Australia and Canada are harder targets?
  • Can you guess why China is circling Taiwan so hard nowadays? Because they want TMSC in order to overcome their current chip production limits (nm/transistor count)
  • But why is that important? Because of Moore’s Law. We’ve hit the practical physical limits of transistor size vs molecular complexity with current manufacturing methods. We (humanity) are stagnating now, and can’t climb up The Kardashev scale no more.
  • But we can’t stop because our resources and time are limited. Our planet is on a clock right now. So their apparent solution is: secure/stockpile rare Earth metals, sufficient energy reserves, and production means to train AGI, because apparently someone at some point put the idea that AGI would be the solution to the manufacturing problem.
  • But this is all being exasperated by AI training since the start: resources invested, materials wasted, energy spent, planet heated/polluted. Now it’s a recursive problem and a self-fulfilling prophecy
  • And everyone is betting they can solve it first, the will be the ones that’ll win the AGI race, and save us because they’re the good guys and know what they’re doing. Our wise leaders will sacrifice anything to save their citizens, even their own public image (see how noble Trump/Putin/whatever are being?) to save the planet. The end will justify the means surely, and people will forgive them once they realise what was going on all this time. Poor them.
  • Nobody is even stopping to ask: “but what if we (countries) worked together instead of against each other?” because of people like Trump being in power.

There you go. My current working theory.

P.S: wonder where the existing rare Earth metals went? Ask the planned obsolescence/anti-repair people and the Phoebus Cartel.

Ffs. . . Putin is giggling in glee at the payoff from his agent in the White House, and all the time/effort spent on troll farms and blackmail.

[–] ShadowRam@fedia.io 42 points 1 week ago

Same with China, as Russia and US fuck around with this stupid shit, China's going ham on Large Scale clean/free Energy, Chip Design, Robotics and Space Exploration...

World is getting smaller, and goof thinks Greenland is going to be some kind of magical barrier?

Wonder if conservatives knew they were voting to destroy all America's allegiances. Or if their brains were incapable of thinking that far ahead.

I'm gonna go with option 2.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 35 points 1 week ago (1 children)
  1. they don't know what that word means
  2. they don't care what that word means
  3. they think america doesn't need anybody but america
  4. fuck anybody that is not america
[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They also seem to think "fuck at least 2/3 of America".

[–] Aqarius@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

They don't consider those people "America".

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 28 points 1 week ago (6 children)

Have you talked to a Republican or MAGA?

They cheer on destroying relations with Europe.

I really want to stress how deeply unpopular this is in the U.S. The MAGA movement is about 30% of the electorate, so you can generally expect that even the dumbest, most insane Trump decisions have a floor of 30% approval. 9% of Americans support this, 86% oppose it. At minimum, two-thirds of Trump's most rabid, loyal followers are against this.

[–] Threeskittiesinatrenchcoat@lemmy.ca 37 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Something I’ve learned in the last decade, no matter how unpopular a position, MAGA supporters will fall in line with the party rather than risk threatening the parties authority.

[–] pjwestin@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Maybe. MAGA is fracturing right now. Withholding the Epstien files really was too much for some of them, and Marjorie Taylor Greene's defection gave a lot of them permission to question and criticize him. Invading an ally for no reason might actually break through to good chunk of the average red hats.

I hope those numbers can be turned into actions to stop Trump.

The elected officials need to be reminded what the vast majority of their voters want them to do.

The only reason Trump is doing this is to get the USA out of NATO for Putin. The reason he works for Putin is because Putin has some very compromising pictures and videos of Trump, involving children and possibly pee

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 week ago

The only reason Trump is doing this is to deflect everyone's attention from the Epstein file fiasco. The diversionary war theory is a real thing.

A large percentage of the world finds Donald Trump being president of the USA unacceptable.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

A large percentage of the US as well.

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 15 points 1 week ago

We have an authoritarian dictator in the white house surrounded by constant drip adderall'd sycophants. Most of us are scraping the barrel to get by because we are overworked and paid shit.

This is all by design. We are just expendable peons to them.

Tech bro billionaires getting unlimited investment for AI and other nonsense are working on plans for Greenland.

Wake the fuck up people. We have nothing to lose but our chains.

I don't understand why the danish officials they even wasted their time to go to Washington to "talk" about this. There's nothing to talk about this.

Have they ever tried to reason with a toddler that's having a tantrum "I want that toy now"? Waste of time.

[–] arendjr@programming.dev 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Simple: if the toddler has found daddy’s gun because the safe was left open… you better try talking before you scare it.

[–] EvilCartyen@feddit.dk 12 points 1 week ago (9 children)

This is not a toddler, this is a guy bigger than you and with lots of guns and friends. Talking is our only option, especially because it means we can also go against the narrative that Denmark cannot defend Greenland.

Which is true in isolation, but that's why we're in NATO and the joint arctic command and have the 1951 deal with the US that you guys can scale up military presence in Greenland at will. Yet it hadn't happened in 20 years, only reductions.

Personally I think we should have gone more into how Biden refused to increase the defense of the arctic region within the agreement, give the trumpists a way to call him names and solve the issue within the agreements we have.

Still, Lars Løkke has been doing the rounds on Fox News and elsewhere to give our perspective, which could influence public opinion and help change the false narratives being spread in the US. From our perspective we had everything to gain from a meeting and very little to lose.

They have nothing to lose in doing so.

At worst "conversations" delay an American invasion giving more time for Denmark to prepare.

Any half-competent diplomat will ignore "pride" as a consideration for a chance at stopping a war or at least giving their own side's military more time to prepare, with no actual downside (if that fails they get the exact same outcome as if they didn't engage in "conversations").

Also no doubt a lot of "out of the spotlight" work is going into convicing the members of that Administration who are actually intelligent types putting on a "derranged far-right populist" act for Trump and the American Public, that such a move will indirectly be bad for them personally because of the downsides for the people who own them - big American businesses - of turning Europe into an Enemy rather than merely a trade competitor.

Apart from all the deflection and Putin and Gilded-Age foreign policy policy theories, which may well be right, I think President Dingleberry also found out that Greenland is 1% larger by area than the Louisiana Purchase, which would make him the president that most embiggened America. How can you you deny MAGA if he literally made it greater (in size) than any president prior to him?

It's also possible he has only ever looked at a Mercator and thinks Greenland is literally the size of Africa or South America.

Fuck him. I personally will fight for Kalaliit Nunaat’s autonomy (and sovereignty - if they want it.)

Trump has quite literally zero regard for Greenlanders as human beings. He only sees land for him to supposedly own.

Fuck him and enablers with the flame of a thousand suns.

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I don't know what kind of authority Greenland / Denmark would have to expel all US personnel from Greenland, but given there are US military bases there, I imagine there might be some contractual issues.

As an alternative, at this point, I think they should be blockading those bases, and searching any vehicle going into or out of it for supply reasons. Also institute a no fly zone over their base so they can't just air drop stuff in.

No net new personnel going into the base (staffing swaps maybe... like 1 in 1 out). No new weapons allowed.

If Trump was going to try something, you don't want them being able to prep those bases to assist with the assult any more than they already can, and you want them locked down with defences in their pathway before anything starts.

Ask Cuba how that went.

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Cuba was a stones throw away, and didn't have the military capabilities of Denmark.
