17% of Americans can throw themselves directly into a volcano.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 34 points 5 days ago (1 children)

pretty sure they'd need assistance on that, so, eh. you know.

You think one of those rascal scooters could make it to the summit?

Probably 15% of those don't know what annex means

[–] ArchLand@szmer.info 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You propably meant about 88% of them.

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

I meant 15 % of the total. So only 3% knew what annex meant and still wanted it. Sorry I should have clarified better

[–] Tehbaz@lemmy.wtf 51 points 5 days ago (1 children)

17 percent of Americans need lobotomies.

Fucking hell that's too high. They've been nothing but an excellent neighbor to us and they want to remain sovereign. This is just a demand for a forever war against old friends that will also result in us actually being attacked on our own soil for once. Because yeah, they know where our bases are and if we're invading they're going to use their modern military.

In fact, I'm angry at the term annex here. Annex is a word that feels neutral and like it could be bloodless, the word in question is invade or go to war with. Going to war with Canada would result in attacks on our cities. Civilians will die on both sides for no fucking gain. Billions of dollars in infrastructure will be wiped out for good reason and that's all assuming that nato stays neutral, which they've made pretty clear isn't the case. We need to start talking here with the people in our lives about how that's what "annexing" canada looks like, and make damn sure that we get into the 90+% range vociferously opposing this bullshit.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (3 children)

I think even many Canadians don't think it through. If we survive the initial invasion we will be deprived of education, healthcare, freedom of movement, democratic representation, autonomy, resources like water and electricity, employment and money. Some of us would be pulled out of our homes and disappeared or killed, particularly if we're vocal critics of the USA. We would be closely watched and guarded and met with violence at the first sign of resistance or noncompliance. Our children would be indoctrinated in school. Our scientific institutions would be shut down. Our friends and family, particularly anyone who is not a straight white cis Christian conservative, will be in constant danger. It won't be just an administrative handover that allows Canadians to get on with their lives. It will be brutal and punitive.

Even if 100 percent of then wanted to they still wouldn't have a moral claim over it.

Is it bad if I want Canada to annex Minnesota? (where I happen to live.)

[–] alquicksilver@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago (4 children)

Yeah, I don't entirely object to the reverse (as long as California is adopted into the family), but making Canada part of the US? No thank you. Fucking crab bucket mentality; can't let other people have nice things.

As a Canadian I like visiting Minnesota and it feels like a real shame not to be able to visit there right now because of all the fascism. I think many Minnesotans would fit in quite well among Canadians. But there are also some horrible reactionary elements there. Perhaps persuade them to move to Texas first.

25 pc of the president's base is evangelical. They want chaos, war, misery, to hasten the second coming (of angry vengeful jesus, none of that weak ass new testament bullshit,) where the faithful, them, get brought to heaven and the world drowns in lakes of blood and fire.

These people believe in nothing to advance the common good, the common good to them is pain, strife, and the end of the world.

Naturally they see the president and his puppet master in Israel making US and UK swells dance waving around tapes of them fucking children with epstein as a gift from god to bring on this rapture.

[–] porcoesphino@mander.xyz 22 points 5 days ago (2 children)

So many US sources say shit like "only 17 %" as if this is a low value. It's infuriating

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 10 points 5 days ago

And saying 66% don't want the USA to annex Canada as if that's in any way a reassuringly low number.

[–] stoicmaverick@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I think the wording is meant to contrast how few Americans actually want it, vs, how much Trump wants it, who, as president, should, in theory as an elected figure, represent the majority opinion of the people. So, they are calling attention to the fact that it's a low number, but for a different reason than your reading.

NGL I'd want Canada to annex us.

I'm in the PNW, it's a fairly common sentiment around here.

[–] ChillPenguin@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

I'm from MN, same here. Especially since the federal government despises us so much.

I was always kinda hopin' Canada would annex us instead.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

I've traveled to a few states and I think some of them would make fantastic provinces. Some of them have people very kind and friendly, and I like to think that fits well with Canadians.

Set it up! If you can get orange daddy to sign off on it (convince him it'll sway the vote to be more red with fewer blue in there) we'll be set!

You like bacon? You ever had sortilege?

[–] NauticalNoodle@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

bacon and sortilege both sound nice.

17% of Americans are abjectly stupid

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 20 points 5 days ago (3 children)

The percentage of Americans– actually humans in general– who’re are just utterly irredeemably idiotic is above 17% in my estimation. So coming in less than that is a win in my book.

[–] WamGams@lemmy.ca 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

i think 20% probably are irredeemably stupid, another 20% could have been lifted up by better education and parenting.

Meanwhile I'm sitting here wishing Canada would annex the U.S.

Or at least New England. Not even the whole of New England. They can leave Connecticut behind. That may be better for everyone.

God no. Please Canada, don't join us! We are a dumpster fire right now. If we try yo gorce you, fight us!

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago (2 children)

wait. Can I help? for. uh. citizenship?

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

This is questionable. Partially because the knuckle draggers who support trump largely wouldn't know what the word annex means.

70% of Americans believe in angels. If you take the extreme end of that statistic you can just insert any crazy belief.

[–] GhostPain@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago

And those 17% couldn't find Canada on a map if their lives depended on it.

[–] Arancello@aussie.zone 11 points 5 days ago

Well of course they do. Its just so unfair that Canadians get public health care, parental leave, good public education, no school shootings, and better treatment of citizens. Why should Canadians have a better lifestyle than american slaves?

[–] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I can only assume this 17% want to because they're just parroting their Dear Leader.

Any same person would ask "why?"

[–] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 7 points 5 days ago

I'm betting at least 10% would have trouble finding Canada on a globe. At least 5% would have trouble finding Canada on a map of North America.

I want Canada, Denmark, or almost anyone else to annex the US west coast.

Maybe Canada could trade Alberta with the US in exchange for Oregon, Washington, and California.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

What percentage want another country to take over the US? If that question isn't in that survey then its meaningless. Which it probably still would be no matter what. Most surveys target certain demographics to get the answers they want.

[–] Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

And how many percent of them hesitated to say that they agree with that?

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago

Only 66% were against, so you can safely assume that other 34% all really think we should but some of them just were smart enough not to say it out loud.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Considering you can get 30% of americans to agree with anything on a poll, 17% must be like the amount of americans who think like "autonomous" means "automobile maker" or something and are too embarrassed/overconfident to ask for clarification.

[–] Chippys_mittens@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago (2 children)

People who willingly participate in surveys shouldn't be trusted.
