from the reddit comments:

There used to be a shelter there! They removed some of the shelters and now we're getting "cost-effective" seating. You know what would've been cost effective? Leaving the fucking shelter.

It was probably one of those Lamar Outdoor Advertising bus shelters. There are still a lot of them being impeccably maintained (for the advertising) along long-discontinued bus routes in Whitehall and Baldwin.

You do not hate Robert Moses enough for what he has done to the American psyche.

Cars (2006) is like his dying fever dream

your bus stop has seating?!

[–] GaryLeChat@lemmygrad.ml 46 points 1 month ago

Ikr, sometimes bus stops are just a sign on a telephone pole and the standing area is a snowbank!

Kerala. It's a famous picture.

All I can think of is what if all the time, effort, and money that goes into designing hostile architecture was instead used for something, anything more productive/helpful for society

[–] Homer_Simpson@hexbear.net 36 points 1 month ago

You guys have a a cement pad and 2 seats? The bus route here is literally just signs, at least I assume there are signs.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 32 points 1 month ago

And yankies say the UK looks depressing

meanwhile the bus stops in the city i grew up in

surely unrelated but i fucking love catching busses i wonder what's up with that

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

on most days that has more to do with the timetable than the facilities but they're nice when you need them

[–] MasterBlaster@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

absolutely but it doesn't hurt that when you're stuck waiting on a delay you're in a genuine shelter, one wall short of being a building

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

If it just finished the curve and had a door wouldn't that still be technically a one walled building?

think-about-it

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hell yeah, I remember seeing these things. The curved bench seems a little anti-homeless, but the shelter providing good wind protection probably makes up for it.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

More people can sit on it with the curve. Unless you put a long straight bench right in the center.

I assume those seats are metal. If so - they must get cold as fuck in winter and (very?) hot in summer. Truly "cost-effective" seating.

More: too low and a tripping hazard.

Better than nothing

Nah, this is actually worse than nothing. The seats are too low for good ergonomics (usually around 15” ) for general population. The seats are too shallow meaning you can’t lean back or relax. Even though it’s double sided, it’s unlikely two people can use this at the same it.

It’s extremely hostile architecture as there’s no way to adapt this design. This is just a tripping hazard considering it’s painted black.

If they were going to go with a 2 seater they could have at least sprung for the teeter totter

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

Snowflakes! In my day someone would chain an outdoor chair to the post until that chair decomposed into dust

[–] LeninWalksTheEarth@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

Pittsburgh has one train, which is pretty amazing on it's own. Cities that size arent allowed to even think about rail transit.

[–] Schlemmy@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

We have poles with a sign on top and no seats in Belgium. Busses still stop there though. Guess it counts as a bus stop.

[–] LeninWalksTheEarth@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

that's like 99% of bus stops in America
