Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Fuck me, i know we like to mock the average american, but there really are a lot of stupidly brave, rudderless, “on the right track” people over there who are ending up doing adventurist shit because there’s no party to organise them. Sad to see.

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 105 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Just a line of people, wrapped around the outside of the prison, wearing various costumes and practicing their bit. Like something out of a Naked Gun or Mel Brooks flick. data-laughing

[–] Commiechameleon@hexbear.net 47 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Loving it... But I'm wondering if we couldn't figure out how to spring him ala oceans 11(12,13,14, idk) and use the scenario as a dnd campaign to map out the many different possibilities across thousands of play groups at once. fedposting

[–] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 29 points 1 month ago (2 children)

You essentially just described military war games

[–] Commiechameleon@hexbear.net 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hell yeah, I bet plenty of folks would "play" a campaign like that.

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 95 points 1 month ago (10 children)

Anderson said he had weapons in his bag, and inside the bag was a barbecue fork and a pizza cutter, according to the criminal complaint.

dude was springing him from the can to take him to a barbecue lmao

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 56 points 1 month ago

This reads like one of those "dangerous weapons confiscated" the PDs put up on X.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 40 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I stabbed myself with a BBQ fork once and it wasn't even that bad

I say this as someone who once got shot with a crossbow

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 29 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What did Daryl from the walking dead miss a zombie and hit you?

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 32 points 1 month ago (1 children)

His name was Greg and he was drunk

Pulled a classic "Hey, check this out" and nailed me right on the collarbone

Fuckin' hurt

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ouchies...did you have to go to the hospital?

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 42 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh yeah, had to get stitches because the bolt hit the bone, glanced off and tore a big gash across my front shoulder region

Went to the ER, gave them a fake name and address and snuck out without paying

Hid it from my family until it healed and never hung out with Greg again

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 43 points 1 month ago (1 children)

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 33 points 1 month ago (10 children)

It sounds a lot more impressive than it was

I literally was told to walk down the hallway to the billing desk and I just didn't stop

This really sounds a lot like the high-jinks of the early Civil War, when nobody was quite certain if secession was actually happening or not.

Bleeding Kansas campaign unlocked

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago (3 children)

um sweetie he's a murderer and not a hero

[–] unmagical@lemmy.ml 50 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Hasn't been judged so not a murderer.

Also the actions of whomever killed the CEO did strike enough fear in insurance companies at the time that there was an influx of claim approvals which led to people actually getting care they needed which is pretty fucking heroic.

Also the guy died committed grave institutional horrors and removing his option to do so was a good thing which we need more of.

[–] booty@hexbear.net 38 points 1 month ago

I still think it wasn't actually him, but the guy who did it is both a murderer and a hero and more such murders would only be a good thing for the world.

No. Idiot logic. Full stop.

He is someone who sacrificed his own freedom to administer justice to someone who is responsible for untold death and suffering that otherwise would never see justice and would continue to hurt people and be rewarded. These people are heroes in societies where injustices like this exist, and you’re doing a massive disservice to your fellow countrymen for perpetuating these injustices by condemning those who fight against them.

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 46 points 1 month ago

good enthusiasm, but the statement you're responding to was said in jest

[–] RNAi@hexbear.net 37 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

SorosFootSoldier was doing what the cool kids call "a bit", imitating some spineless dipshit

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 39 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh. I think I’ve spent too much time seeing libs on facebook say that exact thing not in jest. Its ruined me.
