Fuck AI

"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Fucking stupid also because the university should be paid for ChatGPT to give them access to the queries and input the highly academic CU staff and interns are inputting, or at least give it to them freely.

ChatGPT is getting more value out of the arrangement than the university, yet the university is the one paying them $2mil.

and whatever input might become useless if its being mish mashed together when OPAI, which can hallucinate things, so they have "reasnoable doubt to accuse of violating Uni policy for anything"

if they are using it to screen for "cheating" on Papers or writing prompts, they are in a world of hurt once the lawsuits hit.

First of all, why is this even necessary for education? That doesn't help anything, only enshittifies what's already overpriced. And they'll probably pass the cost on to the tuition.

Second of all, there are plenty of fucking free LLMs that people can use if they really need it for some odd use case where it doesn't actually make learning outcomes worse.

Third of all, they could have used that money to offer scholarships, but no cause that would tarnish their "business model." Fuck this country, and fuck the commodified education system.

It is mostly likely the same reason why adobe, microsoft, and google strike these kind of deals: the job market demands their usage and so not educating your students on how to use them means not properly preparing them for their future career.

Its a dogshit scenario, but as a web developer forced to use windows 11 without admin permissions and pidgeon holed into every garbage MS product this company requires I use, not knowing how to use their tools and operating system would have disqualified me from getting the job, even if I know how they work simply by using a competitor.

I doubt OpenAI survives another year without govt bailout, but currently, every dipshit with too much money who hires people expects us to know how to use the hallucinating gaslight machine.

Hard agree. My current employer ties 3% of my annual bonus to “demonstrating the use of AI in everyday work”. And I’m lucky it’s so little, I’ve heard much worse.

It’s like having to put “blockchain” in the resume a few years ago, or “social media” before that, or “mobile apps” before that, or “e-commerce” before that, or….

Why it matters: CU is betting that embracing AI — rather than restricting it — will level the playing field for students, prepare them for the modern workforce and address data security concerns head-on.

"ChatGPT how do I install a filling?"

"Drill through the orbital cavity and then superglue some steel onto the tooth."

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 13 points 2 weeks ago

That's fucking ridiculous. Wrong on so many levels. What the fuck.

Just get a student loan. You'll get such a good, high-paying job as...let's see here...an English Classics major...that you'll pay back your $160K in student loans in only a couple of years.

These fuckers must have more blackmail than Epstein with how easily they dupe CEOs and school presidents.

Idk what's more insane : the fact they are paying, or the fact that $2M would somehow only pay for 54 students worth of scholarship...

$37K per student, seriously !? Where is that money even going to !?

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Chatgpt is free. What the fuck is wrong with people paying for it!
