Sad pipet noises

[-] PotatoesFall@discuss.tchncs.de 46 points 9 months ago

Explanation? Are these guys huffing ether or something?

[-] Quereller@lemmy.one 87 points 9 months ago

They pipette by mouth, which is not very safe.

[-] expatriado@lemmy.world 82 points 9 months ago

but how are we supposed to accidentally discover artificial sweeteners?

[-] new_guy@lemmy.world 35 points 9 months ago

By distilling piss from diabetic people? Idk I'm not a scientist i just like the memes

unless you drink from the pipet

[-] hexthismess@hexbear.net 41 points 9 months ago

They are using their mouths to suck liquids into pipettes. It was an old and dangerous lab technique.

[-] mexicancartel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 9 months ago

Then how are we supposed to do that?

[-] hexthismess@hexbear.net 29 points 9 months ago

Use a rubber bulb on the end of the pipette. That way your ~~cartel members~~ lab techs are safe.

[-] mexicancartel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 9 months ago

We still use mouth in secondary school. I guess its same in undergraduate degree too. But yeah we only take the base in acid-base titration in pipette

[-] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 8 points 9 months ago

Jesus Christ. 20 years ago my chem teacher used to tell me about the bad old days of having to do this, that it's still happening today is horrifying.

[-] TonyTonyChopper@mander.xyz 7 points 9 months ago

definitely not standard procedure here in the US. And basic solutions can be more dangerous than acids.

[-] mexicancartel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 9 months ago

I guess they only gjve non toxic bases for school

[-] RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de 21 points 9 months ago

I am a bit concerned everyone is just mentioning the squeeze rubber ball thing, maybe because its time appropriate for the images.

But in modern times people should use something like this https://www.integra-biosciences.com/global/en/pipette-controllers/pipetboy-acu-2

[-] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 5 points 9 months ago

That's the worst squirtgun ever.

[-] girl@lemm.ee 3 points 9 months ago

I love my drummond, if only it came in cool transparent colors too ๐Ÿฅฒ

[-] ivanafterall@kbin.social 2 points 9 months ago

We use drinking straws. You just do the "tap the top opening of the straw really fast" trick and it sucks the medicine right up.

[-] HubertManne@kbin.social 6 points 9 months ago

rubber bulb. its a bit like the end of an eye dropper if you ever used the old fashioned kind. The modern ones are actually sorta complex where you can let go and the liquid will stay inside and you press an area near the kneck which will release the vacum. back in those days it was just a bulb and a bit frustrating to use so they did this dangerous technique.

[-] JoBo@feddit.uk 3 points 9 months ago

With a squeezy rubber bulb thingy.

[-] stolid_agnostic@lemmy.ml 40 points 9 months ago

Basically it took many years before someone developed something that could be run with a trigger or button. Before that you used a vacuum (your mouth) to pull liquid into a pipette. Heard an older chemistry professor talk about a colleague who years before swallowed a salmonella sample by accident. A lot of people surely got hurt this way.

[-] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 12 points 9 months ago

not a scientist but I'm guessing they are siphoning some chemical by sucking up a small amount in the tube to transfer it to another container

[-] HonkTonkWoman@lemm.ee 9 points 9 months ago

Aww, I thought they were blowing bubbles. Looked like fun.

[-] atocci@kbin.social 33 points 9 months ago

Look how long their fancy straws are! I bet they keep chemicals a safe distance away from possible ingestion!

[-] CouncilOfFriends@slrpnk.net 3 points 9 months ago

I'm wondering if a crazy straw was tested...for safety

[-] stolid_agnostic@lemmy.ml 19 points 9 months ago

lol lol let me suck up this salmonella sample real fast

[-] quiterather@lemm.ee 8 points 9 months ago

I thought they were sipping pee to test for diabetes ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜Œ

Uh, yeah, suck it, pipet boy.

[-] atomicorange@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

The silliest of straws.

[-] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 4 points 9 months ago
