Repugnant comments in response to someone comparing Iran to Ghorman. Libs truly cannot have a modicum of humanity with the third world. These same people will say "don't let perfect be the enemy of good" when asking you to support the people who bombed Gaza to rubble. A LOT of Ukraine flag bio posting in there as well. People saying Ukraine is the real perfect victim cause their government has never hurt anyone. Yeah 8 years of bombing schools and arming literal nazis was just nothing, just epic wholesome shit. They want to pretend to be anti-fascist cause they watched a show, but they will worship actual fascists in a second

I said at the time that the choice to make the Ghor French-coded belied the fact that they couldn't imagine making audiences empathize with "imperfect" victims or even minority coded victims.

It is a dead-end, not radicalism or a call to action. These people jack off to "I have friends everywhere" signs cause they recognize a fellow consumer, but they will not recognize the legitimacy of states opposing the west.

USA definitely gives off empire vibes.

But the Islamic republic is no ghorman. Didn’t they just kill thousands of their own people weeks ago?

“The US is the empire, but Iran is evil because they killed thousands of protesters! I know because the US said so.”

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 40 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

isn't the plot that protestors are being led by empire to get consent for the imperial control

[–] ZeroHora@lemmy.ml 26 points 2 weeks ago

Yep, which is funny, these fucking ********************** cannot understand the fucking show itself.

[–] LeninWeave@hexbear.net 27 points 2 weeks ago

their own people

hitler-detector

[–] towhee@hexbear.net 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Unfortunately Iran also said so. Usually this is considered insufficient by propagandists so is pumped up into the 10s of thousands, though.

[–] cornishon@lemmygrad.ml 25 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That's not Iran saying that it killed thousands of protesters. Of course, Al Jazeera wrote it in a way such that if you want to read it that way, you will.

[–] towhee@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I think if the people killed were predominantly security forces and innocent bystanders that would have been emphasized a lot more by state media, and it would have been cast as a terror attack instead of insurrection.

[–] cornishon@lemmygrad.ml 19 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The quoted statement by Iran literally did emphasize precisely that, the rest was editorializing and quoting "respectable western organizations" by Al Jazeera.

[–] towhee@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago (6 children)

This is cope. A lot of people were killed. Whether you think it was justified is another thing but accept it. This place went crazy last month when Good and Pretti were killed by ICE. Two people.

[–] Formerlyfarman@hexbear.net 13 points 2 weeks ago

Inocente bystanders and policemen, stop spreading western propaganda.

[–] MayoPete@hexbear.net 12 points 2 weeks ago (8 children)

You can not like something a country does and also not want that country to be bombed. Because let's be real: the people who did the killing aren't getting justice. Did those 150 girls deserve to die because some police thug was doing police thug shit?

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 16 points 2 weeks ago

Call me AALewis because I'm going to quote myself again.

Liberals hypocrisy monger over "queers for Palestine" because they can't grasp the idea of being opposed to genocide on principle.

You can not like something a country does and also not want that country to be bombed

Correct! That is what I am saying. I am further saying that lying about what the country did because you don't want it to be bombed is stupid. I am attracted to socialism because I want to understand and act within the world as it is.

What’s the implication made by mentioning good and pretti?

I promise you they weren’t shy about using the T word, I can find more examples if you want, and videos of people shooting at cops

Americans aren't even regular literate; why would you expect them to be media literate?

[–] Test_Tickles@hexbear.net 56 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

These people see the intense bombing Gaza went through while official death tolls were in the 30,000 range after a year of it, which was surely understated, and they also believe that the Iranian government managed to kill 30,000 protestors in the matter of a month without evidence of violence on a massive scale as Gaza.

[–] Frivolous_Beatnik@hexbear.net 47 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

These motherfuckers were claiming Iran killed 20,000 protestors in a single day when Khamenei was killed.

Was actually blindsided with this narrative, not only by how fucking ridiculous it is, but by how I hadn't seen any buildup of the story - to me it just appeared fully formed from the brow of the US propaganda machine like Athena

[–] Test_Tickles@hexbear.net 26 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Not that reason would ever work on these types of ppl but that's a lot of bodies, how would that even work logistically? How many people could the Nazis exterminate per day with their industrially-sized human slaughterhouses? Always the most absurd claims for the violence they are about to commit (babies in ovens, pregnant women, 20,000 ppl in one day, etc etc).

That was more like matter of days! They were that eager to believe any information that confirms their own superiority over the 'orientals' .

[–] SickSemper@hexbear.net 19 points 2 weeks ago

The violent riots lasted literally 3 days. Hilarious

[–] Drithvan@hexbear.net 46 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

As someone who loves Andor so much, I can definitely say this is the case. All the libs flying the rebel flag and singing Bella Ciao are the very definition of shitlibs.

PS, for any actual leftists who are fans of Andor, I wish we could use this flag instead:

[–] free_casc@hexbear.net 44 points 2 weeks ago

I made a mistake with an acquaintance who is a fan of the show. I thought I could connect from a lefty perspective and brought up how aggressive US foreign policy (incl NATO and the MIC) makes everyone less safe (including in the imperial core) and how it sucks that the Ukrainian working class had to take a meat grinder to the face because of it.

Learned my lesson when I got an earful about how actually Ukraine is actually cooking the aggressive Russian invaders right now and the world is more peaceful under US hegemony than it's ever been. That was like 2 years ago I think.

[–] hollowmines@hexbear.net 36 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

personally I hold it against the fans not the show

[–] SickSemper@hexbear.net 26 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It can be both. Beau willimon spent time in Ukraine and said it inspired ghorman, so it’s at least partially on the creators own liberalism

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

sometimes what you read into the text was written into it

[–] SickSemper@hexbear.net 19 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I watched a lot of reactions to the massacre. The two most common comparisons people drew were Gaza (genocide) and the maidan false flag snipers specifically. It didn’t take much for people to see empire as Russia. Tragic tbh, truly a show for 🇺🇦 🇵🇸 posters

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 13 points 2 weeks ago

Superman (2025) stands alone

[–] newacctidk@hexbear.net 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I don't hold it against the show itself, but I do think it dampens the show's radicalism or at least speaks to why it was never gonna be a real watershed moment.

[–] hollowmines@hexbear.net 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I think that's simply too high a bar to clear in our hyper fragmented media emvironment. What would that "watershed moment" even look like? It's our job to change the world, not a damn Star War's.

blob-no-thoughts um ackhually you stupid teenager, Iran isn't Ghorm because Iran is bad.

Just like literally every other time the US attacks someone, it's just one bad guy attacking a smaller bad guy who would be just as bad or worse. In the show we saw Ghorm was good.

[–] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 27 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ukraine has trained Latin American cartels and is killing civilians in Africa. Not exactly a small bean

With fiction people see what they want to see. Maybe that's in part a product of the destruction of media literacy both functionally and ideologically ("the curtains are blue!"), and it's partially the fact that writers are libs and even when they're writing something ostensibly anti-imperialist they can't help but code their fictional Empire with aspects of The Other as the real-world empire depicts them, but regardless of the reason the end result in our current moment is that satire and critique will never change anyone's mind about anything.

The best you can hope for is to already be on a journey towards anti-imperialism for other reasons, and to connect with a show about it because it makes those concepts seem a lot more clear.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago

Part of the problem is the westerner's tendency to believe not in "no investigation, no right to speak" but the opposite, "no investigation, everyone MUST listen to and agree with my dogshit opinions."

After watching Mandalorian I got really disenchanted with the Star Wars franchise after being a life long fan. Is Andor worth watching?

[–] Marasenna@lemmygrad.ml 24 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Yes. Especially if you're a life long Star Wars fan. It's the single best piece of Star Wars visual media since the original trilogy.

Edit: I'm sure you know this, but just in case others don't, be sure to find a way to watch it without giving Disney any money.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 23 points 2 weeks ago

It's better than every piece of Star Wars media except maybe A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back.

[–] SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml 23 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's easily the best piece of Star Wars media to come out since the 80s. It's a spy thriller first, and a Star Wars show second, and that's to its benefit.

It has some genuinely radical themes too, though as OP points out, libs are notoriously illiterate

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 9 points 2 weeks ago

Id say it's the best star wars media. It makes even the original trilogy pale in comparison when it comes to all the things that make me like star wars - Scrappy rebels, political allegory, charming rogues, pew pews, sci fi spirituality, stunning and slightly alien vistas, fascinating world building, and so on. It's just so good.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 23 points 2 weeks ago

Andor is really fucking good and I got disenchanted with Star Wars over 20 years ago

[–] darkcalling@hexbear.net 18 points 2 weeks ago

Andor is worth watching even if you don't care about or even hate Star Wars. Until the second half of the second season it could pretty much be any sci-fi setting. It still has lib bits but any Marxist will appreciate a lot of it.

I haven't paid attention to any of the new Star Wars content post the prequels (2000s), not watched a bit of it but I watched this on a recommendation and it was absolutely worth it. It has a permanent place in my media collection now.
