LOL, "believe".

I get these polls are about trying to measure public understanding of all things reality-based, but reading that is like hearing some creationist going on about how they don't "believe in evolution.

I guess if put $1.50 gas on my pedonald vision board, it will be so the next time I go to a gas station...

[–] Lutra@lemmy.world 7 points 14 hours ago

did we not have facts and stats? believe?

[–] OCATMBBL@lemmy.world 9 points 19 hours ago

I saw a tattered, shredded Trump-Vance flag hanging from a telephone pole in a boony town yesterday, and it felt like such an appropriate metaphor to today's US.

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

And it was better onder Trump 1

And better onder Obama

And better under Bush

Wait is there a continuous downward trend???

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 7 points 18 hours ago

It was lower under Biden. For once the average schmuck is right.

[–] DelnitaCrane@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

Impossible, I refuse to believe that the majority of Americans are capable of recognizing reality.

[–] Snowies@lemmy.zip 1 points 13 hours ago

“Americans overwhelmingly believe their eyes”

[–] ReluctantlyZen@ani.social 134 points 1 day ago (7 children)

What do you mean "believe"? It's not an opinion

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago (17 children)

It is at this moment I would like to remind everyone that 100 is the average IQ, which necessarily means that half of the people that walk among us are rocking double digit IQs.

[–] kescusay@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's not necessarily half. There could be a group that is a fair bit less than half, but are so dumb they throw the averages off.

[–] lyrial@anarchist.nexus 1 points 19 hours ago

IQ Georg is an outlier and should not be considered

[–] Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's a normal distribution so it's pretty damn close to half

[–] kescusay@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

Sure, but there are going to be brain injuries and other disabilities that have a limiting effect on IQ, which would lower the mean relative to the median at least a little. And it's hard to imagine there's an equivalent upward trend of genius outliers.

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, 100 is the median IQ, but that doesn’t preclude there being a lot of people with exactly 100 IQ. Thus there would be less than half of the population below 100 (and also less than half above 100).

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Think about how dumb the average person is, then realize half the population is even fucking dumber.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

That quote from Carlin is one that often comes to mind, LOL.

It's alarming to learn how accurate that actually is. People often talk about how comedians are basically today's philosophers and I can understand why.

The measurements on numeracy and literacy in the United States explains quite a bit about one's everyday experience. I mean, I went to university and graduated. I got mostly A's in K-12. I was not valedictorian. I did not have a 4.0 in university. I don't have a PhD. I consider myself someone with about average intelligence, but I applied myself. I read rather widely. I try to apply logic to situations and assess new material as it comes in.

I don't think this is some high bar for an adult. Honestly, I consider the above the bare minimum. Often it felt like I was coasting in high school and parts of university.

But everyday experiences and seeing how other adults behave and what they believe and accept as "fact" seems to constitute a baffling array of the ridiculous and the silly. When you remember things like this, it makes a bit more sense:

Voters are just dumb in general. They love to revel only in the good parts of the past when they can't cope with the present. Which is understandably so, because wallowing nostalgia is said to be a natural antidepressant for humans. In any case, Americans thought the economy was better under Trump 1.0 when Biden was in office, who had to contend with Covid and fixing the damage created by the Republicans. And now, voters are full of regret and think Biden's administration is better? They get what they voted for! No take backsies!

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 37 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Who gives a shit about opinion? It's just an objective fact. What that dipshits supporters have deluded themselves into believing doesn't change that.

Well of course, our standard of living have declined every year since the seventies. We take a pay cut every year because they changed the way inflation is measured to understate it, the old measure averages 5 to 8% a year just by 2008 while the new measure is like 2 to 3%. It is a compound fucking that just by 2008 would have seen your average Social Security check be worth $1,300 more a month. It really is like that. Numbers Racket, Harper's Magazine, 2008.

That said the rate of compound fuckery has obviously increased under this President as we all knew it would.

[–] nahostdeutschland@feddit.org 31 points 1 day ago (12 children)

That is really insane. It's a fact that gas has become more expensive after Trump attacked Iran. The media is full of articles about expensive gas. That is something you can see just by driving to a gas station. You can experience that in your daily life, see the prices with your own eyes. And 35% of Americans believe that gas was more expensive under Biden, just a little of over one year ago?

I kind of can understand that you are getting a wrong impression of things outside of your personal sphere when watching the wrong media. If you're living somewhere rural and if you've never been in Los Angeles, you can get a wrong impression of Los Angeles if your media reporting is wrong. But for something that everyone can experience everywhere?

[–] ArbitraryValue@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think people (correctly) assume that the poll will be used as evidence to criticize Trump, and if they support him they don't want to give his opponents that evidence. So they'll say whatever doesn't imply criticism of him.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 1 points 18 hours ago

So over 1/3 of the population are bootlickers.

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

I think I remember reading that the act of remembering something is neurologically indistinguishable from just straight up imagining something, but I might be making that up

For real tho, everyone's memory is crap and most people won't/can't take the time to research things they think they remember

Yeah, we know, Trump still has about a 30-40% approval rating. We know! It's in every damn poll.

Also, since they're just asking AI now, instead of surveying actual people, what's the damn point of these polls?

Replace "believe" with "have the receipts to prove"

[–] kboos1@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Those that believe that it's cheaper under under Trump in survey either don't know how much things cost or willfully voted for Trump in the survey knowing that things are more expensive

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Or they're twisting themselves in mental knots, while living deep in denial.

voting against their own best interests. it's what they do.

Kudlow can piss off. The only success for MAGA is creating more expensive shit thanks to food prices.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago

Is it as terrifying for others as it is for me? Being confronted by the fact that a third of the nation is absolutely unhinged? That's a lot of people.
