Wait I thought we were gonna push him left what happened

[-] stolid_agnostic@lemmy.ml 25 points 8 months ago

This is definitely a generational issue. Younger people are over it and older people are doing what they know.

[-] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 56 points 8 months ago

This is not a generational issue. Israel was an Apartheid state 50 years ago, too.

[-] zed_proclaimer@hexbear.net 27 points 8 months ago

If you look at polling it absolutely is. 27% of young people support Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip compared to over 80% of older people.

[-] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 25 points 8 months ago

Right now, but what about those older people 50 years ago compared to their seniors?

[-] stolid_agnostic@lemmy.ml 7 points 8 months ago

And 50 years ago nobody outside of the Arab world cared. That’s the change — people care now.

What do older people know? Start war, at hot chip, and lie? Joke aside I don't understand what you mean?

[-] stolid_agnostic@lemmy.ml 10 points 8 months ago

From recent observation, world governments are following the Israel line—basically universal and unceasing support.

Reading around places like here or reddit, however, I’ve noticed that people are for the first time putting blame on Israel for this happening and are demanding better treatment for Palestinians.

I’m not convinced that this would have happened ten years ago, but maybe it would have. It also seems that polls are finding greater support among older populations than among younger ones.

My point? I suspect that the next generation of politicians will view this as apartheid and not protection from terrorism.

[-] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 37 points 8 months ago

If you look outside of Reddit and the International Community, many countries support Palestine. The imperial core is a minority numerically here.

lets be a bit more cynical, nobody inside the state department legitimately cares about palestinian lives.

the road the administration is taking (full backing to israel as it provokes every regional opponent) is bad fucking business.

to anybody who knows the first thing about persian gulf strategy, it's literally insane to be sabre-rattling while US navy resources are in the fucking medditerrean. if egypt closes the canal, as they'd be wont to do in a military confrontation with israel, Iran will run roughshod over US allies and remaining assets in the persian gulf.

these people are thinking the only reason to actually goad Iran into a fight is when the US has the whole marine corps and half the navy balls deep up the persian gulf and ready to "roll into" Tehran when it 'becomes official". we know they'll lose that fight but the fundamental thing is under the ideology and dogma of the US imperial apparatus, Israel is a disposable asset, and if the Biden admin goes full-throat for them into annihilation, that's not ideal for the interests in charge of this shit. the reason Israel exists is to destroy and absorb US-hostile forces and munitions with limited liability. the US actually becoming engaged ruins the point of having a proxy do it

I'm starting to think the US state-military apparatus has a humiliation kink.

[-] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 20 points 8 months ago

They are thinking "Step on us, Xi". It is the best explanation.

[-] SoyViking@hexbear.net 16 points 8 months ago

I think they're just the failsons of failsons who have been huffing their own farts for so long that they actually believe their empire is a shining city on a hill representing the most elevated ideals of freedom, democracy and civilization.

[-] usernamesaredifficul@hexbear.net 16 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

if you only recruit people who believe in the international order then you are going to only get people who have no fucking idea how geopolitics works

[-] usernamesaredifficul@hexbear.net 16 points 8 months ago

Also the Chinese have taken an interest in the Israel Gaza conflict now as have the Russians so there's another world power taking interest in the middle east again for the first time in a while

[-] Teekeeus@hexbear.net 49 points 8 months ago

some of them seem to realize it's not a good idea to alienate the entire middle east

[-] spectre@hexbear.net 40 points 8 months ago

There's a book called "inside the emerald City" which details the politics of the "green zone" in Iraq during the occupation. It's wild how the few competent people in the state department were constantly ignored by the ghouls put in charge by the Bush administration.

All they wanted was "some restraint" so they could build imperialism more effectively and politely but that wasn't even good enough.

[-] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 23 points 8 months ago

[-] RedWizard@lemmygrad.ml 47 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

cables are seen within the State Department as consequential statements of serious disagreement at key historical moments. The dissent channel was established amid deep internal conflict during the Vietnam War, and diplomats have since then used it to warn that the U.S. is making dangerous and self-defeating choices abroad.

More and more each day the echo's of the antiwar movement ring louder and louder. The bell tolls for you, Joe. You may have already been to late to answer its call. Your legacy will be apartheid.

[-] bubbalu@hexbear.net 33 points 8 months ago
[-] some_guy 21 points 8 months ago

Let’s fucking hope so. The best thing that could happen is if the administration suddenly realized its support of Israel will tear the agency apart.

[-] DickFuckarelli@hexbear.net 12 points 8 months ago
