I've been sick of the marketing push about this for months by now. Just let it be over punished-bernie

Extremely obvious attempt at viral marketing that people have nevertheless fallen for and will continue to fall for when the even more obvious attempt at viral marketing happens again.

Marketing works. All modern cultural events are the result of marketing

I think people have just accepted that they have to participate in viral marketing stuff now because it's the only way to relate to half their friends, families, and coworkers. Like, did anyone believe for a second all these zoomers were that into Grimmace?

[–] zifnab25@hexbear.net 0 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Idk. At a certain point, complaining about this stuff feels on par with the scalds who were angry over jokes about the Titanic Sub.

Yeah, a lot of the shit in the news is a marketing gimmick. But what else is new? Getting worked up because people made Grimace memes for a few weeks after some McDs ad guy spent too much money to force the subject to trend gets us what, exactly?

People like movies. Both these movies appear to be well received. So people are piling on a thing that looks fun.

Nothing wrong with that.

Ah forgive me comrade I didn't realize I wasn't allowed to express my frustration about being saturated with astroturf marketing, and that I especially couldn't do it on a communist website

I will promptly return to the pod and eat the bugs

Libs: the 2 hour toy commercial is based because it recuperates and co-opts feminism

Conservatives: the 2 hour toy commercial is cringe because it hates men

Everyone else: I'mma smoke some weed and go laugh at the 2 hour toy commercial with my friends

debord-tired

Let me enjoy the slop before Mattel creates their own cinematic universe that I end up hating as well.

Hexbear Challenge: stop being mad about popular culture and just go see a movie for fun

[–] TheSpectreOfGay@hexbear.net 1 points 2 years ago

get real, being a contrarian is at least 50% of my personality. if i enjoy things i will basically dissolve into nothing!

[–] Gosplan14_the_Third@hexbear.net 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

and just go see a movie for fun

no (it's expensive and to go alone is kinda pointless)

[–] abc@hexbear.net 1 points 2 years ago

wrong. matinees exist for a reason and, for example the AMC theater by my house does 30% off IMAX and Digital showings from 9am-4pm Monday - Wednesday.

going alone is worth it. there is nothing better than sitting by yourself with a film YOU are interested in seeing and becoming immersed for the next 90-180 minutes in a dark theater. I dunno about you but I certainly don't have a 20x20m screen and surround system set up anywhere in my apartment - David Lynch was right that you can do yourself a disservice by watching some films on a monitor, tablet, or even a 60" TV.

I do agree that most movies aren't really worth paying to see when you can just pirate them in 2-3 months - slop like Cocaine Bear or the 3rd reboot of Haunted Mansion don't need a large screen or surround sound to be enjoyed - but I wouldn't have wanted to see Dune, Avatar 2, or Asteroid City (just to name a few recent examples) for the first time on my monitor even if it is 4k. I said it in another post the other day - some films are meant to be spectacles and part of the spectacle is seeing it on a huge ass screen and feeling the sound.

This is only enhanced by going alone - especially when you're sitting in a theater 20 seats across from the only other person attending the showing (literally my Asteroid City experience a few weeks ago at 4pm on a Friday. 10/10 we both enjoyed the movie).

FWIW, I do agree that the theater experience can be expensive if you're going to non-matinee showings - even I weep at an $18 IMAX ticket price. But I've always reasoned that I wind up spending more than that whenever I grab drinks at a bar for an hour or when I go out to eat with someone. shrug-outta-hecks

BARBENHEIMER BARBENHEIMER BARBENHEIMER BARBENHEIMER stop-posting-amogus

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 1 points 2 years ago

If I see one more politician talk about Barbenhimer or about how Barbie is woke propaganda while the country is burning I'm going to lose itjokerfication

[–] nemmybun@hexbear.net 1 points 2 years ago

I hope they keep expanding the Barbie Cinematic Universe (BCU) and it completely takes over and it's just Barbie movies and shows and fandom everywhere for a decade

[–] richietozier4@hexbear.net 1 points 2 years ago

Let’s say, hypothetically, I’m a Barbie girl

[–] regularassbitch@hexbear.net 1 points 2 years ago

big agree. 70% of memes are ads now and it's exhausting

[–] rafflesia@hexbear.net 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

mattel is working on fourty fucking five movies about their toys. the slop is never going to end.

surely this includes Disney, right?

right? anakin-padme-4

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Oh, it'll end just in time for Barbie 2.

Barbie meets her grandmother, Lilli the Nazi Sex Doll

[–] Sinister@hexbear.net 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

My lib sibling literally called Oppenheimer an anti-communist propaganda piece, so I guess you should be thankful Barbie gets pushed more.
