Elon now has real political power to flex and as we know he is a dumbass extraordinaire. Now he's come out railing against a stopgap funding bill that's chock full of pork because that's how you grease the skids

We are in for a rough four years

I don't think :melon-musk: will last one!

[-] Runcible@hexbear.net 52 points 2 days ago

I get that I might be off base but it's still not clear to me why people think Elon has a ton of power now that he didn't previously. Trump's presidency doesn't translate into Elon's power because Trump already got what he wanted and has no loyalty whatsoever. I thought it seemed pretty likely that this relationship was doomed because neither personality is able to restrain their own damaging bullshit and stay focused on their goals so why would they work well together?

[-] PKMKII@hexbear.net 54 points 2 days ago

Yeah people seem to forget that under the first Trump term, every other week there would be a new wormtongue sweet talking Trump into his or her idea of what to do, and then Trump would get bored or annoyed with them and move on to another advisor.

[-] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 29 points 2 days ago

The short answer is the chuds love him and so he can put pressure on reps with the bully pulpit

Musk I think is happy to be a sycophant, he spends basically all his time on Twitter grovelling for attention, I don't see him taking issue with playing second fiddle to trump. We will see

[-] conditional_soup@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago

Somebody back in October or November predicted Musk would be assassinated in December. At the time I was like, "yeah, okay, buddy". I think about that a lot recently.

Government efficiency is when no government

[-] starkillerfish@hexbear.net 47 points 2 days ago

That is the core of libertarian philosophy

[-] Hexamerous@hexbear.net 16 points 2 days ago

Would be on brand for Melon to re-invent the government, but just shittier in every way possible.

[-] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 17 points 2 days ago

It cannot be stressed enough how bad this would be: if Musk and his DOGE start cutting deficits, the US economy is going into recession. This is just the first of many to come, if they indeed let it happen.

And I suspect the New Republicans will want to let that happen, because why not? The New Republicans want Trump to endure a bad economy under his tenure, while they get to punish the voters for not voting for Kamala. “See, this is what happens if you let Trump win.”

This is going to be extremely bad.

[-] Des@hexbear.net 23 points 2 days ago

yeah the dems are in full "FAFO" mode. they are absolutely giddy for this. apparently every one that posts about how happy they are for the "voters to get what they deserve" is fully insulated and independently wealthy.

so yeah the party's actual base.

It seems Musk started using his children as human shields because he's afraid of getting got.

[-] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago

He's got goons

The large son behind him is one of them

[-] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago

[-] NPa@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago

he needed some way to remember the strong password for his crypto wallet so he doesn't lose it in a ketamine fugue

[-] TrashGoblin@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

Implying Musk remembers the names of his kids

[-] vertexarray@hexbear.net 49 points 2 days ago

I've been saying it for years: warlordism is the slimmest form of government

America needs to eat shit economically before anything can get better globally

[-] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago

That's just the thing, if America eats shit economically the way it really might, then I'm not sure the union remains intact by the end of the decade. Like, suburbanite grillman guys who have never had to even think about having to tighten their belt will suddenly not be about to get there jalapeno poppers at Applebee's, or afford the gas to go to an NFL game... And that's the same type of dude who's built themselves a small armory in their basement. Trump comes in promising the world, but plummets the country into 3rd world levels of poverty - that ain't going to end well for them.

[-] Sodium_nitride@lemmygrad.ml 48 points 2 days ago

The first I saw this news on a reddit thread they were blaming BRICS for this.

And these were bernie type "progressives".

[-] SpookyGenderCommunist@hexbear.net 28 points 2 days ago

..... How??? Because Elon is South African??

[-] Sodium_nitride@lemmygrad.ml 26 points 2 days ago

Because aparantly the American ruling class is in the pockets of Russia and China.

[-] barrbaric@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago

Damn, if the capitalist class in the US is controlled by the bad guys, perhaps we should do a proletarian revolution and establish communism.

[-] TheModerateTankie@hexbear.net 36 points 2 days ago

America's gonna get the Milei treatment. Cool. marx-doomer

[-] lemmyseizethemeans@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 2 days ago

Where's that Zimbabwe gadzillion dollar bill? Odds are 2026 comes aroud and term limited Trump will have 2 years of lame duckness. He's starting off coming in as a lame duck is hillarious.

Sink it Elon. Make that hyperinflation go to-the-moon

[-] HakFoo 13 points 2 days ago

I've heard rumours that when Zimbabwe funally pulled the plug on their old currency, only a fairly small number of people got access to the $100 trillion notes.

This has constrained supply and is why they sell to collectors now for well over $50, when most retired hyperinflationary notes (Germany in the 1920s, Hungary in the 1940s, Yugoslavia in the 1990s) are $1-$5 junk-box items.

So I await seeing how they metagrift this grift.

[-] rando895@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 day ago

I mean at this point the billionaires should just force a huge recession and use the opportunity to buy up all the businesses that go under, and homes that are foreclosed. They definitely have a big enough stranglehold on political economy

[-] ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml 27 points 2 days ago

American politics really is the worst reality show of all time.

[-] lemmyseizethemeans@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 2 days ago

But at the same time, it is hilarious

[-] GrumpigPoopBalls@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago

everyone is currently in panic mode at my office because nobody saw this coming before yesterday and now they have to cram what has been weeks of planning ahead of previous shutdown scares into 2 days

[-] Sodium_nitride@lemmygrad.ml 17 points 2 days ago

Congressional leaders unveiled the bill's text Tuesday, kicking off a push to pass it by the end of the week to keep the government funded until mid-March.

I was 90% sure that congress passes budgets for the whole year. Is this just to raise the debt ceiling till March (the end of the current fiscal year)?

[-] NuraShiny@hexbear.net 26 points 2 days ago

Can't kick that can down the road too hard, or it may not be an issue to report on and uselessly talk about forever, which would free up time in the news to talk about problems not designed to distractions.

[-] AcidSmiley@hexbear.net 7 points 2 days ago

Can't kick the can down the road when there's only toll roads and everything else just collapses
