No no he’s right. They should adopt policies based on popular public opinion. Things like:

Ending support to Israel

Universal healthcare

Student loan forgiveness

Vastly raising the minimum wage

Launching Elon Musk into the sun

Oh wait those weren’t the policies you meant were they

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 35 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

"accurately" is the weasel word he will use to argue that all of the policies he dislikes are actually unpopular and what the people want is more austerity.

[–] djphdk@hexbear.net 15 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Yep, exactly what he's doing. The polls are fake, the policies that would improve the lives of most people aren't popular actually. What a gross little weasel.

[–] regul@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago

All those dang dark money progressive groups cooking the polls to say people would like free healthcare.

[–] QuillcrestFalconer@hexbear.net 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Launching Elon Musk into the sun

Is there any poll about musk that phrases it like this? I doubt it

[–] Calmrade@hexbear.net 23 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

This would make me a single issue voter. Let's send him.

[–] ThermonuclearEgg@hexbear.net 12 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

This is such a waste of resources, but I'll accept it if we gui-trans the rest of the billionaires

[–] Calmrade@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I think that's a perfect compromise.

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 72 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Cool let’s start with the public’s social and moral values on a ceasefire in Gaza.

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 34 points 3 weeks ago

No see when he says accurately what he means is "aligned with my worldview"

[–] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 52 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Comrade Matty adopting the fundamental maoist tactic of the mass line.

[–] TrustedFeline@hexbear.net 43 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

The difference is that a Maoist takes ideas from the public and forms a coherent political program from them. It's a back and forth between the party and the masses, which results in a strong party that intelligently advocates for the people.

Matty is just talking about polls for culture war issues. It's chasing the political winds without putting any kind of thought into the project as a whole

[–] LENINSGHOSTFACEKILLA@hexbear.net 24 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The liberal mind doesn't see a project. The project is just american capitalism, and we've got it already! The end of history is here, we just need to tweak a few tiny issues here and there and there and there and there

[–] hotcouchguy@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Exactly, ever since the cold war ended with liberalism's complete victory, it's become a fundamentally conservative project, with no vision or project beyond maintaining the status quo. It literally has nothing to offer, and can't comprehend a future different than the 1990s.

[–] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 16 points 3 weeks ago

Damn I was hoping Matty was so impressed by China's large population that he adopted Mao Zedong Thought with reichburger characteristics.

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I was literally unable to conceptualize the idea as anything other than maoist thought as you've described it. What the fuck else could you ever want from a political party???

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Other unwashed masses: the political parties should listen to our demands

Me, a very intelligent unwashed mass-particle: the political parties should not listen to my demands

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Matty: the political parties should listen to only my demands, because I have all the best, most popular ideas, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

When he has 1 billion children they'll be popular.

[–] heresiarch@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Maoism is when I find intellectual ways to not directly say "We need to start hating trans people more," while ignoring calls to end genocide or institute free healthcare.

First world maoism and the mass line is securing more imperial SSuperprofit$

[–] sodium_nitride@hexbear.net 35 points 3 weeks ago

You know liberal democracy is very democratic and free when an "underrated idea" is for the liberal democrats to do democracy.

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 33 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

This would be a marked improvement to Democratic party policy. Things like not doing genocide and having healthcare poll pretty well.

The bar is in hell

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 22 points 3 weeks ago

We all know it is not these issues they're going to poll people on, it's going to be things like transphobia and racism

As a test of concept, lets do a poll about what should be done to Matt Yglesias.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 19 points 3 weeks ago

(a) [redacted]
(b) [redacted]
(c) [redacted]
(d) [redacted]

I'm particularly fond of "c" myself. I don't want to be too explicit so I'll just say that I like it for comedic reasons.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 14 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

My vote involves the worlds largest sling shot and a giant ball of fusion reactions roughly 8 light minutes from earth.

[–] Feinsteins_Ghost@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago

straight into that MF, too

[–] john_brown@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago

Rather than a billion Americans, there should be a billion pieces of matt yglesias

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 9 points 3 weeks ago

Put him in a room with all the accurate stats that show he's wrong and don't give him Internet access to complain about it

[–] FnordPrefect@hexbear.net 22 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

the-democrat Ok, so we have the latest polling in...it seems everyone hates that we 'don't actually stand for anything' and 'are soulless robots contorting ourselves to polling data'. So make sure to incorporate that insight into your public personas going forward!

[–] LoveWitch@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago

We got great results for being bipartisan and reaching across the aisle. 40% of republicans said they’d like us better if we adopted republican policies so here’s a white paper.

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 22 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I too think the designated "progressive" party in a two-party system should resign to a purely reactive position and leave it to the right to actually try to change people's beliefs.

So free healthcare, no student debt and Palestine liberated?

[–] crusa187@lemmy.ml 21 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

They kind of do this already, but there’s a vital step 3 which is missing from the graphic:

(C). Collect donor money and do whatever they tell you, fuck the voters.

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago

Like a jellyfish riding a current.

Sounds like blissful ignorance

[–] Llituro@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago

me when i go and invent the mass line but just for when it aligns with my liberal idealism

It's a good idea for people to be smart and do things that are correct.

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago

the-democrat Our bribers are at odds with the public. We choose the bribers and then blame the pubkic when our strategy predictably backfires.

collusion As in tradition.

[–] NewOldGuard@hexbear.net 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

No leadership, no analysis, only tailism and vibes

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 9 points 3 weeks ago

it would be an improvement

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 12 points 3 weeks ago

It's funny how Bluesky works. Very popular accounts are aware of what Matty is posting and they criticize him but tend to be elliptic and they don't refer to him by name. I guess they think they are being clever but just as they are aware of Matty - he is aware of them. They are feeding the troll and he must love it. He posts his dipshittery and just ~1 hour later people like Jamelle Bouie are referencing his post.

if your grand approach to politics is bloodless poll-testing so that you're always aligned with wherever public opinion happens to be, you've already lost

I think a really underrated idea for Democrats would be that:

(a) now is the time to do what we have been doing, and
(b) that time is every day.
