I was typing out a question about what this is referencing, and then it occurred to me. Cowabunga, dude!
In a metroidvania platformer, that's where you can find an health or weapon capacity upgrade. In a modern open-world FPS, that's where you can acquire the sawn-off shotgun early on.
Unless you're in Cyberpunk 2077 - then you'll only get fans complaining that you used the wrong type of manhole covers in your game...
