Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

One (1) person tries to blow up a plane with bombs hidden in his shoes: For the next 24 years everyone who boards a plane has to take off their shoes first

Over 400,000 shootings in 11 years: What can we do, these things just happen shrug-outta-hecks

Flight travel is profitable, keeping children alive surprisingly isn't. Sorry, that's just the infinite wisdom of the market at work.

It would actually be really funny to publish a study evaluating the cost of this policy over the last 24 years, even in bullshit neoliberal economic analysis.

Looking at the cost of time primarily - how long taking shoes on and off adds to the process, how many man hours have to go into TSA to do THAT specifically, the average wage of a traveler and the lost "value of their time" from the extra wait, and all of this multiplied by the hundreds of millions of flights per year.

That's what we're willing to spend to keep airlines profitable because people get spooked off flying due to a really weird and niche terrorist attack for like, a week, but we won't spend a goddamn DIME to stop children being ventilated in the halls of their schools.

Leaving the business of keeping children alive to parents and community members by their own uncompensated toil and at their own expense is very profitable

While I'm sure they appreciated this, I have always believed that the primary purpose of the TSA was to normalize the police state

edit: I believe even preventing plane related demolition was secondary to this

I thought it was a tool to remind you that you live in constant danger, so you consent to neverending war in the middle east.

Thank God, I normally charge $20 to take off my shoes, I appreciate TSA not sneaking in a free show from me

my diabetic ass with my insulin pump even though the idea of someone putting 1mL of nitroglycerin or some other explosive into an insulin pump to use as a weapon is fucking stupid. TSA loves putting their grubby hands on my insulin pump to 'check for explosive residue' fuck off AHHHH

So maybe in another 24 years we'll be allowed to bring water bottles on planes again

This is being pushed by Big Footwear to keep your feet imprisoned within the cages they sell to you.

[–] dannoffs@hexbear.net 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Of course. I literally just bought slip on shoes for a flight yesterday.

[–] Wertheimer@hexbear.net 22 points 3 days ago

Pack them anyway - they're phasing this out in different airports and one of your stops may not have the machines they prefer.

Passengers flying out of Hancock International Airport in Syracuse, New York, did not have to take off their shoes on Monday, CNN affiliate WSTM reported. However, on Tuesday morning at Chicago O’Hare, CNN affiliate WLS saw passengers still being asked to remove footwear.
