Really? ... I would have taken you more of a Frosted Mini Spooner type

[–] HowAbt2day@futurology.today 2 points 10 months ago

Either way, love it or it’s free!

As long as you clean up after yourself ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 27 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Malt-O-Meal cereals used to be the "cheap offbrand". Not so anymore. They're usually slightly cheaper than the name brand, but I've also seen them be more expensive per oz/gram than the name brand. I stopped buying Malt-O-Meal cereals 5 or 6 years ago when I saw the new pricing. The new "off brand" are the store brands. Those are significantly cheaper than Malt-O-Meal.

I mean, the better alternative is to just not buy sugary cereal.

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago (9 children)

I mean, the better alternative is to just not buy sugary cereal.

Are you really in a position to criticize others on what they consume?

source

I choose not to drink alcohol. When I see other people posting about what they drink, I don't go around telling other people they shouldn't. These are personal choices. We're both aware of the potential health consequences of our chosen actions. I believe people should be free to do what they want as long as they aren't hurting other people. I don't want to think the worst of you, but the only reason I think of for you to make your comment was from a position of moral superiority. I know I've been guilty of that before and been ashamed of it later. Did I just catch you on a bad day?

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 3 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Somehow you turned something so lighthearted into something so pointlessly judgemental.

Like yeah we shouldn't eat sugary cereals, and if it's expensive a good alternative is to cut it out. This is just facts.

No need to go digging around their post history like that. It's just kinda weird

[–] yistdaj@pawb.social 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Maybe I misread this interaction, and maybe it's not my business, but this reads to me as a judgement on blarghly for both implying judgment on other people and for drinking (I doubt it would have been used as an example of hypocrisy otherwise), then I read it as about how you make the superior decision to not judge people for drinking.

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

but this reads to me as a judgement on blarghly for both implying judgment on other people

Yes, that was my intention.

and for drinking

No, that is NOT my intention.

(I doubt it would have been used as an example of hypocrisy otherwise),

The drinking example was that blarghly was clearly criticizing other for their choices of what they put in their bodies because it is unhealthy while ignoring blarghly is also putting something in their body (alcohol) which could easily be criticized for being unhealthy. blarghly was demonstrating "Rules for thee, but not for me". That rubbed me the wrong way.

then I read it as about how you make the superior decision to not judge people for drinking.

If you're referring to the later posts in the thread, you should notice I was using blarghly's exact words except replacing "sugary cereal" with "alcohol". I was doing that NOT because I care they drink, but to show blarghly how unfaithful their argument was but showing it in the context of blarghly's own vice. I honestly don't care if people drink or not. I choose not to, but I also don't criticize others that choose to. What I was criticizing blarghly for was their hypocrisy, not their drinking.

I get that it's meant to pick out hypocrisy, however I keep reading a deeper implication. Maybe I'm just reading things that aren't there, but if drinking was virtuous, the right thing to do, would it be hypocritical for blarghly to drink? I don't read it that way. I interpret that it's treated as hypocrisy to mean that drinking is bad, that blarghly probably shouldn't drink.

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

but if drinking was virtuous, the right thing to do, would it be hypocritical for blarghly to drink?

They are equally neutral because the choices we make for ourselves don't affect others. blarghly chose to think the opposite of that, that those that eat sugary cereals, and the people that eat them, are making bad choices.

I interpret that it’s treated as hypocrisy to mean that drinking is bad, that blarghly probably shouldn’t drink.

Were the original subtext your only context clues, I could understand that take. However, I have repeatedly clarified that I don't care other people drink. With that, I'm not sure why you still feel the subtextual reading is the right one. If you don't trust my clarification, then okay, but that means there's nothing I can say to convince you otherwise so I'm not sure if there's more to talk about.

[–] yistdaj@pawb.social 2 points 10 months ago

Okay, knowing that you view it as neutral helps. For some reason I didn't get that.

All true about me except the last one; Time will show

[–] GratefullyGodless@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Don't give General Mills any ideas. Actually, its probably already too late. They're probably working on spam flavored cereal as i type this, and will call it Sugar Spam-Os or some such.

[–] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 2 points 10 months ago

That's alright, I'm pretty Basic.

[–] burgermeister@sh.itjust.works 17 points 10 months ago (5 children)

THEY'RE ... fine, actually. Pretty good.

And here I am, wanting to hear it in a "straight" person's voice.

[–] DrDystopia@lemy.lol 12 points 10 months ago

"Ahoy matey!"

Yes, you can buy me a drink, fellow handsome man!

[–] Luouth@lemmy.world 11 points 10 months ago (1 children)

On a serious note, those Mateys are fuckin' tasty!

[–] brap@lemmy.world 17 points 10 months ago

The cereal ain’t bad either.

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

We used to get Malt-O-Meal cereals for free because a cousin of ours worked in the factory.

[–] dditty@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I used to love waking up and smelling the factory making cereals in the morning

[–] Batman@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago (2 children)

You guys buying cereal from a box and calling it off brand. This is luxury!

[–] Hazmatastic@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Malt-o-Meal was actually the cheap bag brand when I was coming up. Never seen these in boxes, but their versions of cereals slap

[–] Batman@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Hmm true now that you mention it my marshmallow mateys are doing well for themselves.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 1 points 10 months ago

I get oats in a paper bag, something like £0.70/kg or so

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 6 points 10 months ago

I have shopped at Aldi for so long that I don't even know what brand half the products I buy are copies of anymore. Most of my shopping is generic products though like rice or veg.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 10 months ago

I like to be the small spoon though I am not mini...

[–] absentbird@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

I have always thought marshmallow maties made more sense than lucky charms. It's only natural for marshmallows adrift in a milk sea to turn to piracy.

[–] davidgro@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

That's really weird to see those in boxes. They are the main brand that comes in bags where I am at least. (Besides the super bland religious-or-something brand)

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Frosted Mini Spooners are better than Frosted Mini Wheats. They have more sugar to the point of having almost a thick sugar crust sometimes. They're great.

[–] weariedfae@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Malt o meal in general is better than what it is imitating.

[–] untorquer@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Agreed, shame they switched the recipe on Coco-roos ca. 2002 though.

[–] Antagnostic@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

I knew a fruity dynobite once, nice guy.
