I just don't know how to pronounce
Hover your mouse over it for a pronunciation guide
But I'm on mobile
do you have the icon next to voting that looks like a page of paper? that's "view source" and will show you the text that gets replaced with the image
Hold down on the image and it should hopefully pop up a context menu with the name (in this case "gangster-spongebob")
Not in Jerboa
Oh right. I was describing a web browser feature.
I dont even see pronouns on mobile lol
you can't pronounce it, it only works when written
The unspeakable one,
who must not be named
Estra/diol?
I didn't even know we had bio's lol.
I think the second idea is great! And much better than just a (see bio). Keeping at least one acceptable option next to your name keeps it a very achievable goal that everyone uses the correct pronouns for others. If there is a constant need to click bios for the small comments, it might make it slightly more acceptable to misgender someone (because the excuse of "I was already typing and didn't want to click away, sorry" becomes more acceptable)
Yeah, if someone's pronouns are gated behind a link, it just becomes easier to play the Pronoun Game (avoiding using someone's pronouns at all) than it is to learn how to actually refer to someone respectfully.
I never look at bios and don't think doing so should become a necessary part of having a conversation.
As an extra option in addition to visible pronouns? Hell yeah why not.
At the same time, how often do you really need to refer to other users in the third person, and of those users, how many of them would actually use this feature? I don't think it's too unreasonable to spare the energy for a right click, left click, ctrl+tab, and ctrl+w — or a hold and five taps on mobile — for something you'll probably have to do once every five years.
Maybe I do too many "meta" comments, but I feel like I'm constantly referring to others. I do so usually using a name or "poster above you" out of an abundance of caution, but I unfortunately don't expect everyone will do it. Principally I agree. Pragmatically I would like more non he/hims to decide which to prioritize: avoiding misgendering altogether (the bio-only option leads to more misgendering, likely) vs getting to have a bio with a more expanded description be the standard for you.
Actually, on second thought, I guess everyone could just be allowed to make that on your own? That's probably actually best. Nevermind what I said above lol. But I'm gonna leave it so my thought process is understood.
i've never looked at a bio and iirc links don't open in new tabs by default because of some accessibility standard that baffles me, this is awful for workflow and people won't do it because of the extra friction point.
idk if the bio can come up if you hover on someone's name, that sounds like lemmy dev things and still doesn't help mobile users and is probably not convenient for screen readers
Hence the second idea: as MLRL_Commie was saying, which was my own thought, "keeping at least one acceptable option next to your name keeps it a very achievable goal that everyone uses the correct pronouns for others".
At the same time, I don't actually personally find checking bios to be particularly bothersome, and do it regularly.

every extra click attritions people. i'm big a web 1.0 grognard
On the one hand I think it is a good idea. On the other I think that if it's because (theoretically, see below) the problem is that a pronoun isn't on the list it should be added. If the 2 pronouns max limit is a problem, then it should be increased.
I do understand that in your case it is because of your "Any pronouns but he/they", which is difficult to have in the (display) name.
maybe having "any except " as a gender in list one and then you pick whatever not-one in list two? i do think it gets rapidly way too complicated to be concise about and being (relatively, i suppose, are you the longest list?) concise about it like the way we have now is important for people reliably seeing and using our pronouns.
on the other hand, having the not-pronoun next to the name might have people using it because they see that and don't parse the negation and that could be a bad day for folks.
A better alternate phrasing might be "do NOT call me", but it still opens up the possibility of "sorry, I just misread it" as an excuse I worry.
Both those things should be done, too. Really, more should be done to make people aware of how new pronouns are added, or how one can have more than two sets of pronouns in one's display name.
I have my third pronoun in my bio, although i'd just list it if I could since its he/him
One of the things I'm worried about is if someone lists different pronouns in the bio than in the display name, that this might cause confusion and create the impression that someone is misgendering someone else, when the person was actually just using the pronouns from the bio.
~~You can tell the mods any new pronoun set to add to the list and it will be! Then you can have exactly the set you want. Unless it's more complicated than a list, then we're back to the reason this thread started :)~~! Turns out I was missing something from Edie's comment elsewhere in the thread and maybe this isn't possible?? Sorry for bad asvice.
No, you misunderstood my comment. My comment was about having more than two pronouns, not adding new pronouns. You were right before your edit.
The person above me already has 2 pronouns in their name, so adding a third would be impossible, no? Or am I still not getting it?
I'm on a see bio diet
I put all that I've collected so far in my bio until I can figure our what black magic Edie did.
@Edie@hexbear.net Tell 'em
You can't. Cc: @roux@hexbear.net
You used to be able to, but it was changed so only the two first pronouns are taken.
I'm guessing they just selected everything?
Authoritarian mods at it again!
