!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

MODERATORS

For awhile it was single downvotes, but it seems that moved up to 2-3 on each comment. Even the most benign stuff gets hit, the pattern is clear.

Can I find this person and block them from seeing my posts? Never really delved into how lemmy works.

Probably doesn't matter much because after awhile the forget and leave me alone for a bit.

I fed a couple of your comments into lemvotes and found out who it was pretty easily. I imagine this is a bannable offense somewhere?

Looks like a normal short term lemmy fight, someone didn't like what they said in a thread and opened their history and downvoted everything on the first screen. Going back 3 days and the downvotes stop.

lemmy.world appears to be their main account, this seems to be the post that triggered them do do their downvoting spree: https://lemmy.world/post/41260627

Looks like the sock puppet master was angry for about 20 minutes, and got tired of manually downvoting. Still pretty terrible vote manipulation making lemmy a hostile place.

[–] Username@lemmy.nz 20 points 2 weeks ago

I think on the original offending post, OP made some somewhat inflammatory comments about ADHD and Autism further down. I imagine the downvoter felt personally hurt by these comments, hence the temporary spree, driven mostly by emotion. I don’t agree with the vote manipulation but not knowing their full story I would caution against people coming across this and retaliating against this person. It seems like it was just a short response and hopefully they have had a chance to cool off now.

2 of these accounts have been deleted

Neat! Don't think I have the energy to do much about it, but that's a great site, thank you very much!

[–] TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip 14 points 2 weeks ago

Lemvotes is a pathway to many discoveries some consider to be depressing.

[–] Unrefined@anarchist.nexus 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Surprised the offender has a db0 account...

No matter what you post, someone will downvote it. It simply just doesn't matter

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

I think OP is right to be concerned, because while we don't have karma like reddit (thank god), supposing someome was browsing old posts in a comm[unity] they might utilise the "Top of all time" filter or even the "most controversial of all time" filter - if our OP here makes a particularly useful post, e.g about a tech support issue - then I'm pretty sure having extra downvotes will actually reduce the reach and visibility of the post, using these filters.

Also in this case it was just useful because it exposes someone acting in bad faith on the fed.

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

But all of this tells nothing about the value, or quality, of OP's posts.

It tells only about the BULLSHIT VALUE of things like a "Top of all time" filter or terms like "controversial".

Blocking a user only stops you from seeing them, not the other way around. They can still interact with your posts.

[–] Rivalarrival@lemmy.today 19 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

You can discover who is doing it with Lemvotes

But no, you can't block them. Here in the real world (as opposed to the dystopian centralized platforms that have largely supplanted public discourse), it is not possible to isolate a specific individual and deny them access to information provided freely to the rest of the general public.

Should their public engagement rise to the level of harassment, there are legal options you can take to compel their restraint. But downvoting everything you do does not rise to such a level.

Downvotes aren't that big of a deal my friend.

[–] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (10 children)

Is it because of that time you were defending pedophilia and regurgitating MAP talking points?

EDIT: or maybe it's the constant repulsive content that has resulted in pages, and pages, and pages of mod actions for years? For things such as: racism, transphobia, actual antisemitism, advocating violence, racism again, and look...

pedophile apologia again...

Man... I wonder why people would downvote you..... it's a a real headscratcher.

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 weeks ago (8 children)

I mean it's a shitty take and really doesn't evidence good understanding of the topic (I used to work forensic psych and have met a LOT of pedophiles) but as far as shitty internet takes go it's meh at most and wild to me that you went to the effort to dig that out from two weeks ago for this discussion.

[–] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

There were a few pedo defenders in that thread (see the other user that got fully banned for doubling down over and over again). I tagged the profiles making excuses for pedos which is why I knew who OP was (roughly).

Just kinda feel like people who try to equate pedophiles as part of the queer community are probably shitty people. And probably have shitty takes.... and looks like they have a lot of shitty takes. So much that theyre whining about getting downvoted.

I mean, Jesus, just look at their modlog... banned for pedo apologia, actual antisemitism, civility, etc etc etc. Pages of mod actions....

Nothing about that comments comes across as defending it. Also, pedophilia is not synonymous with sexual abuse.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 14 points 2 weeks ago

I'm not seeing that, pedophilia is a condition and the user was responding in earnest to a comment asking "why?". I personally would not conflate this with defending child molesters

So you're saying falseWhite and krimsom are a stalker!
Very sad and pathetic.

[–] crank0271@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

falseWhite mass downvotes from accounts on at least three instances that I've seen. There are several others that I've noticed, but it hasn't bothered me enough to look into it beyond that. I figure eventually these accounts will get banned for something or other, and it isn't worth that much time or space in my head.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

careful or jordanlund will silence you for brigading.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 11 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

FalseWhite is a serial vote manipulator, so... Yeah. Dude's not even trying to hide; all the accounts they use to vote multiple times on posts use the same exact name.

Though, OP is also a pedophile/defender of pedophiles, so I mean... They're gonna get downvoted by anyone who knows who they are just for that. 🤷‍♂️

[–] BurgerBaron@piefed.social 5 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah..uh...nice modlog, OP...

To prove you wrong I down voted this post and I don't remember any interactions with you in the past.

[–] lmmarsano@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 2 weeks ago

With all the cranks on here, downvotes are a sign of doing something right. Some instances hide downvotes entirely. Others offer settings to not show them.

Not sure blocking them affects the downvote count shown to you.

[–] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If it bothers you that much, make an account on an instance that doesn't have downvotes.

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That won't help when you're making comments on instances that have downvotes enabled...

[–] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

They won't show up for the account-holder though. Out of sight, out of mind.

[–] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 4 points 2 weeks ago

I highly recommend going into settings and hiding downvotes from yourself. Stick to dealing with the people who at least bother to engage in written form.

Downvoting is lazy and adds zero value. It's pure masochism to let yourself get even a tiny bit annoyed just because some rando on the other side of the world spent 0.5 seconds clicking a down arrow on your comment - which they probably didn't even read to the end.
