Luckily there's a lot more than the grocery rebate.

That said I hope these investments don't go to the existing monopolies:

To help bring down the cost of groceries, which have been rising faster than inflation, Carney said he will direct $500 million from the government's Strategic Response Fund to help food suppliers "expand capacity and increase productivity."

It seems to me that in Canada, a metric country, putting price per pound on an item because it looks less expensive is a dishonourable practice, but has become the norm. Am I to conclude that the general population is very easy to engineer (fool)? Also, $2.99 is three dollars, not two dollars. Cost accounting is the only thing that makes sense when assigning value but greed got in the way of healthy profit quite a while ago.

$500 million in capital investment funding for food businesses, $20 million for food banks

What if we make that 500 for food banks (or something new) and 20 for capitalists?

I just want to point out when someone says both sides is the same they're likely a massive moron.

But when someone says both parties(Liberals & Conservatives) are the same, this stuff gives them a lot of credence. And yes Liberals is clearly more socially progressive or at least not regressive but it really doesn't hold up when they do stuff like this.

Just to elaborate on 2 things. Even by language this is 100% clearly not tied to affordability but some trickle down nature of it.

Carney said he will direct $500 million from the government's Strategic Response Fund to help food suppliers "expand capacity and increase productivity."

It means food businesses looking to make capital investments to help strengthen their supply chains can apply to have some of those costs covered by the fund.

And to provide context for the 20m. It's about $3921 per food bank.

Food Banks Canada is a national charitable organization representing the food bank community across Canada, supporting a network of 10 Provincial Associations and over 5,100 hunger relief organizations in Canada.

These are welcomed measures, sure, but a lot more could be done if the government held the our grocery monopoly responsible for their (criminal, imo) actions. If Carney's government went to battle against Loblaw, Pattison, etc it would instantly make him one of the most popular PM's in Canadian history. Words cannot express how badly Canadians, coast to coast, want to see Galen and Loblaw get shafted with a rusty rake.

Also heard the heard the words "unit label pricing" as well as more funding for Competition Bureau to do its job in the grocery sector.

[–] ValueSubtracted@startrek.website 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes, indeed.

This strategy will include measures to implement unit price labelling so Canada can compare easily in this era of 'shrinkflation,' as well as support for the work of the Competition Bureau in monitoring and enforcing competition in our market," he said.

This would be a welcome requirement in my books.

It's one of those examples of a thing that you see every time you shop and you know the only reason it's the way it is, is so the store relieves you from more of your money. Pure unambiguous adversarial action. They know it, you know it, the gov't knows it, and you see right there how the gov't sides with Galen over you even though he cast a single vote over many of ours. It's infuriating.

Unit label pricing should also apply to advertisements.

So basically subsidizing grocery stores raising prices?

How about instead we hire an oversight board and embed them in these companies to ensure they aren't price fixing. And when they bitch about that, we start talking about bringing charges for price fixing for past and current conspiracies.

That would be communism! ™ (The Chinese commies do this in their large private corporations.)

But in all seriousness, it's definitely one solution. Another is creating a parallel public (state-owned) grocery supply and retail chain that operates at very low profit and letting these bastards compete with it. Both of those are significant market interventions though so ... I don't think the LPC would go for any of them. They've signalled that Competition Bureau is getting a boost to regulate from the outside. We'll see how much effect that has. In theory the CB can stomp the fuckers into submission if the gov't really wanted that but you know, the Liberal party tries to "balance" the workers' and business interests.

Hopefully they also end the practice of property restrictions.
