My Xbox gamertag/Steam id is "Rose in Shadows" and also using "Rosa Umbrarum" and variations.

The inspiration came from The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. The last line of the novel is "Stat rosa pristina nomine, nomina nuda tenemus" ("The rose of the past endures only in name; we hold the bare names") Which is why I usually put "Yesterday's Rose" in the name fields.

I don't know much of Latin at all. Also, the z in the username was for edginess, to make it a Notorious Hacker Alias or someshit.

My name + south park was big back in high school. Substitute teacher came to class, returned me my paper and said: wait, and you're still alive?! Ever since my friends started callin me mr. Still alive. So I embraced it.

It started by realizing other users, the government, AI scrapers, and the internet have potential to be far too creepy and/or investigative to continue using any personal details, namely my name or date of birth. I definitely scrubbed my birth year from everything, haven't quite replaced all my accounts using my m/d though since my name is far from unique. So I have a vaguely techy pun of a movie reference. Zero Cool was the young alias of the main character of Hackers (1995)

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago

Oh cool, now what username would you have of you combined your mother's maiden name, your social security number, and your credit card number?

[–] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

Back when I was in highschool I wanted a gamer tag that my friends would be embarrassed to lose to.

It started as simply cocopuff

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

People don't like being proven wrong, and often try to dismiss it with some variation of "Im not gonna sit here and be told the whatfer by some random idiot"

Like, excuse me sir, you are the random idiot, because you were the one that was wrong.

So when it came to registering on Lemmy, that popped up in my head and bobs your uncle.

Real nice honeypot too, every time someones wrong and backs themselves into a corner instead of admitting they are wrong, they inevitably give some variation of "living up to your user name, huh", which just continues to prove that the actual idiot is the one lashing out like that.

I used to use long defunct old emulator names as uaernames. Now it's dirty local burger chains.

[–] TonyTonyChopper@mander.xyz 1 points 6 hours ago

He's literally me

[–] InvalidName2@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 hours ago

There's a glaring bug in the lemmy dot zip sign up process (via web at least). There's clearly some sort of backend validation of usernames, but it's a mysterious black box with no helpful feedback to end users.

Presumably there are forbidden characters, character limits (min/max), banned word/phrase filters, etc and I assume there's a check to make sure the name isn't already registered. But the only feedback provided is a server-side message "InvalidName" that shows up in a pop-up. That's all the info given, and I even checked the http responses directly to see if they contained any more info. Nope.

After numerous attempts and variations of usernames that I wanted with no luck, I tried InvalidName, and still no luck. So then I tried InvalidName2 and that finally worked.

So, yes bugs and glaringly obvious UI/UX issues are par for the course with the Fediverse, but at least this instance hasn't been shut down or suffered weeks-long outages since I joined, at least not yet.

I used to think carefully about my username, but I want this to be a throwaway... eventually.

I started naming things after albums I like, since I already did it for my lichess account, which has a chess pun.

I have something similar for my self promotion alt

Wanted to create a 5th character in a game to test something and ran out of variations of my normal username 15 years ago. Test worked out, it became my main and now we're here ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

From Jules Verne's posthumously published work, "Paris in the 20th Century"

“Ah!' said Michel, tempted, 'you have modern poems?' 'Of course. For instance, Martillac's 'Electric Harmonies,' which won a prize last year from the Academic of Sciences, and Monsieur de Pulfasse's 'Meditations on Oxygen;' and we have the 'Poetic Parallelogram,' and even the 'Decarbonated Odes. . '

As a scientist with a deep love of the humanities, I found Verne's view that science would ruin literature and poesy quite humorous. Especially since in reality it has just neglected it.

Long story short I got frustrated trying to think an username and typed angrily "ei ole" in Finnish (means it isn't) and then it hit me.

I AM HUMAN. I ASSIGNED MYSELF THIS USERNAME AS PROOF.
