This may have been captured at the perfect moment to look incompetent but he was actually doing it right I think, you can see the nail is driven in and he's about to hit it again, he was probably holding it in the instant before the photo and pulled his hand away with his fingers still pinched just as it was captured. Not to defend him but I think the timing is funny.
But you can definitely tell he's just hitting a nail into wood arbitrarily for the photo, and his grip on the hammer bothers me.
