The drip honestly

i knew a guy who did this legit 20 years ago. possibly the Ur example in my lifetime.

he was one of those contrarian type of guys in late high school and into the early 20s. but it didn't seem malignant in those days. his family situation was tougher than average growing up, and he mostly came across as a pacifist that liked to talk metaphysical whatever. crunchy, granola, vegan. into bodywork and chakras.

in his late 20s he had been living with a woman for years who kinda supported his ass, even though she was still in her early 20s. he would buy toys and not clean the apartment. basically a joker. they got married, but like a year into it, they split up. i had since moved away, so i wasn't around to be dragged into taking sides but she always seemed the more reasonable, level headed and practical one.

anyway, like a few years later we're catching up, and the dude has gone hardcore reactionary. all he does is argue with everyone online with the most intolerant positions, alienating everybody. it was wildly out of character to the guy i used to know. suddenly he was extremely homophobic, anti-muslim, and preaching the one true god at everybody. he married some lady, immediately had a kid, converted to the orthodox church, and that became his whole deal. wearing the crazy get up everywhere, having some big scraggly hermit beard, and preaching reaction to everyone. when trump showed up, he was fully on board. i stopped paying attention, but steadily everyone we both knew would confide that they stopped talking to him.

my analysis is there IS an epidemic of lonely men and these patriarchal institutions offer a plug and play community with on-boarding rituals to anyone willing to sever old relationships through publicly embracing reactionary politics and jumping all the way into marriage, kids, with no real plan for their material situation. i mean, usually the people in those institutions who want their kids to get married and have children will kick in assets towards those milestones if the younger couple will happily cosign to whatever abhorrent values the parents and institution have. effectively, they buy compliance and legacy through generational wealth transfers. i don't think its ever really enough for material autonomy. if anything, it seems like a feudal system where the younger ones are kept just above water and always seeking approval of the benefactors.

They want a church that's "based and trad". A lot were going Catholic for a while, but they've figured out the pope is too woke for them. The Orthodox are as old, have the silly costumes and all the ritual and everything else appealing about Catholicism. But the central hierarchy is much less existent. There are many autocephalous Orthodox churches, so you can choose one you like.

A lot were going Catholic for a while, but they've figured out the pope is too woke for them.

I wonder if there's also a racism component. If you're in an American city with a variety of immigrant cultures, your local Orthodox churches are probably going to be more monochromatic than your local Catholic church.

[–] Bolshechick@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago

Ooh, I hadn't thought of that, but that would make a lot of sense

[–] ourtimewillcome@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

i seriously doubt that they would like the "chroma" of the average monochromatic Antiochian congregation.

hell, many western reactionaries don't even view Russian émigrés as white lenin-dont-laugh any longer.

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Don't reactionaries like Russians for being "based and trad"? I thought it was the woke libs who hated Russians.

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago

Some but I think that's mostly just something they say to try to troll the libs

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago

It's pushed by capitalists who believe the wins of feminism against patriarchy are responsible for the birthrate decline.

And it's pushed by reactionaries who are so vile and disgusting that they can't get access to women without structures that undermine their ability to be independent, both physically and mentally.

They seek to colonise the minds of women and RETVRN them to obedient servility.

The secondary effect is that religious conflict is easier to sell than pinkwashing and "bringing freedom" was.

[–] radio_free_asgarthr@hexbear.net 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's basically replaced "tradcaths" because Pope Francis and Pope Leo were too woke. Catholicism isn't based enough any more, so the based traditional Christianity left is Orthodoxy.

[–] Moidialectica@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Hypothetically, if orthodox church were suddenly not up to par for the reactionaries, where would they go next? Mormons of all organisations?

Honestly, I think at that point they would just turn their back on Christianity and take up German or Roman neo-paganism.

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago

Mormons are too woke, the trad-mons are frothing at the mouth to schism from their prophets because they want to enfranchise women and Minorities into their heaven space thingy and not just keep them as objects of sexual outlets for white men men or are cursed by God with Melanin

[–] robotElder2@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago

The trad was the important part of tradcath not the cath. There seems to be a subculture of right wing, religious, misogynists who want to subjugate women and feel a need for a religious justification for it. They are shopping around for the religion best suited to impose their traditional lifestyle on others. A lot of them tried Catholicism and weren't delivered to the world of fetish pornography they imagined, so they moved on. They won't be pleased with Orthodoxy either because their demand is everything they want (misogyny, homophobia, etc.) at maximum intensity beginning immediately and lasting forever. I wonder what they'll try next? By 2060 I predict a white guy named Breighdyn who calls himself a tradsikh but won't wear the headwrap because its "mooselum".

I can only speak to the case I was personally in contact with but I think it brings up possibly useful elements to consider.

He liked specific personalities within the church broadly who validated his anti semitic theories about what was wrong with the country. I think the fact they are less centralized makes it harder to castigate people like this in a durable and comprehensive way so figures can thrive in the margins and cultivate followings remotely.

He liked that the congregations are often ethnically separated. It validated his beliefs about the way society ought to work ("See, this old tradition understands that a strong community is monoethnic!"). It also gives an easy excuse to not engage in the community or attend services and thus have to give money or time ("I'm Saxon by descent, you can't really expect me to go to church with a bunch of Slavs").

Basically it was a convenient version of Christendom for him to hang his ethnic and misogynistic impulses on without having to seriously engage with anyone. I think you see a similar kind of chud drawn to Pentecostal denominations, they just have different hang ups (don't think of themselves as racist or patriarchal consciously) because you can also just lump your own shit on that version and nobody can stop you.

Idk, is it more conservative, more traditional? I think that's the same reason why there was a trend of more 'tradcaths'.

Anyways, good luck with them fasting.

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 35 points 1 day ago (1 children)

i used to work with a guy who was orthodox christian and him not eating meat on certain days short circuited the brains of the other chuds who saw even partial veganism like that as some kind of extreme wokeness

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That’s awesome, can’t wait until its dawned on them they are following a gay religion

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

elaborate on the gay religion 🤔

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

jesus's social group was 12 men and a sex worker

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

They associate tofu with woke and gay

[–] Sator_is_Tense@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago

from the way they talk about it it sounds VERY traditional, lots of talk about trad gender roles

[–] Cat_Daddy@hexbear.net 25 points 1 day ago

In my head, everything's a CIA op, so it could be intentional. ¯\ˍ(ツ)ˍ/¯

[–] Outdoor_Catgirl@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago

Traditionalist aesthetic plus they don't like the pope so they avoid the catholic church

I saw a comment about this that said something like “Someone once put the word Reddit in front of atheism and it made an entire generation believe in god

And honestly wouldn’t doubt it (it’s at least somewhat true). It’s wild how many posts/comments I’ve seen shitting on atheists. Like just the silliest stuff you’ve ever seen rises to the top. Wouldn’t be surprised if these types were looking for a place to congregate

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago

They correctly identified Reddit atheists as toxic but thought the problem was the atheist part and not the Reddit part

[–] marxisthayaca@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They want to have their obnoxious and fucked up beliefs rubber stamped by some "higher power".

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 19 points 1 day ago

there's only one "higher power" i believe in stalin-smokin

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago

It's a trend due to internet chud influencers telling them to do so. I know because a family member of mine did it out of the blue. I don't think they're sincere in the slightest, it's just a "I have to do it because I was told it's based" thing

[–] GeckoChamber@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago
