Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Not proud to admit this made me laugh out loud. I must not revert to post-ironic posadist posting.

Just fucking kill me already.

they may actually be stupid enough to not realize this possibility

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 65 points 2 days ago

Yes put fucking AI in the nukes because there wren't enough dystopian apocalypse movies and books warning us about doing that.

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 58 points 2 days ago (2 children)

God, from climate change to nuclear winter. I’m fully convinced Americans have a death wish and want to take the whole world down with them.

Lmao no fucking way

Let me guess. This is a way they can "accidentally" launch a nuke and blame AI for it.

Holy war on the tech priests and their false machine god

[–] KoboldKomrade@hexbear.net 16 points 2 days ago

Retvrn to tradition (Belief that the machine god manifests as electricity and not as a slightly fancy markov chain).

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 2 days ago

I mean come on, what could possibly go wrong here

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 13 points 2 days ago

Dune may end up a prophecy more than just a novel

Oh we’re so fucking cooked. In nuclear hellfire.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 38 points 2 days ago

"WHO LAUNCHED THE NUKES?!?"

"The AI did."

"WHY!"

"It said it was doing an improved remake of the 1983 movie WarGames. It said 'Happy endings are lame. Thank you for the gold kind stranger.'..."

[–] BatsAreRats@hexbear.net 34 points 2 days ago

"Hey chatgpt, pretend I'm the president...."

How the fuck do you watch Terminator 1 and 2 and then go "skynet is totally a good idea"? Unlimited genocide on American tech ghouls before they destroy us all.

At long last, we have created the Torment Nexus from classic sci-fi novel Don't Create The Torment Nexus

Here, I made a diagram for the only acceptable AI nuke controller:

US interests have a LOT of money tied up in domestic AI, anyone watching the stonk market knows. Investors stand to lose a fuck ton of money if deepseek gains more momentum, just look at nvda’s single day loss recently.

The government is putting its finger on the fucking scale. Even more blatantly so with Cheeto running the shit show. Expect more manipulation, if nothing else.

[–] CutieBootieTootie@hexbear.net 43 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I hate this fucking cracker empire WHY ARE YOU DOING THE ATOMWAFFEN THING WHAT THE FUCK

[–] qprimed@lemmy.ml 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

because american "individualism" and "exceptionalism" is coming home to roost. more than 50% of voters thought the only thing that matters is their wallet.

the Democrats offered genocide (which depressed base turnout) and "not trump" (which low info voters dont care about) and thats about it.

this is what a corporate owned "democracy" looks like - aka fascism. its been there all along, but the mask is no longer needed.

I know someone who hates Trump because he thinks he's a racist and his supporters are idiots, but voted for him because he's going to make the US look strong.

We're going to look real strong when we nuke ourselves to oblivion. Real "drunk dude at the bar knocking himself out to psyche out his opponent" vibe.

What... what is the use case for this service in this situation (besides charging the federal government 40$ for each query to the AI service)?

[–] Civility@hexbear.net 24 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This isn't nearly as bad as the headline is saying.

This:

Don't believe us? OpenAI has announced that the US National Laboratories will use its deeply flawed AI models to help with a "comprehensive program in nuclear security."

As CNBC reports, up to 15,000 scientists working at the institutions will get access to OpenAI's latest o1 series of AI models — the ones that Chinese startup DeepSeek embarrassed on the world stage earlier this month.

Is what's actually happened.

All the the deal does is give research scientists access to ChatGPT.

They're going to use it to write emails and the boring bits of reports, not as a nuclear launch system controller.

[–] duderium@hexbear.net 28 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well, it was nice knowing everyone.

[–] coeliacmccarthy@hexbear.net 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

let's be real, it was okay knowing everyone

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago

Some of you are alright. Don't come to the nuclear holocaust tomorrow.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 27 points 2 days ago

So... nuclear security is going to go from

picks up phone This is General Brunt Gundersom, let me fire a nuke

To

The AI scanner isn't recognizing my handprint, it says I don't have enough fingers!

Honestly surprised it isn't just a big red button that says "Doom" on it

[–] dom@hexbear.net 20 points 2 days ago
[–] godlessworm@hexbear.net 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

i hope the AI goes rogue and highjacks a drone and flies it into the white house

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 2 days ago

incidentally, a really fun sci-fi short story along these lines https://www.rifters.com/real/shorts/PeterWatts_Malak.pdf

a-guy

Said it before and I’ll say it again. “Clown world” should have been our meme and I think we should make an attempt to steal it for ourselves.

[–] CutieBootieTootie@hexbear.net 21 points 2 days ago

Come the fuck on WHY

[–] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)
