Using a phone exclusively.

I don't get how people will do all of their business on a tiny phone. Like anything that needs more then a few sentences of typing, I'll go to my computer to do instead, same with filling out forms.

Same goes for phone gaming. Touch controls are always ass.

[–] tiramichu@sh.itjust.works 7 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

Same.

I do find myself using my phone a lot more than I used to - all my Lemmy activity is on my phone, and most of my messaging is too. Those are things it's very convenient to have in my pocket. But I could not survive without a laptop.

Any sort of actual task, be that shopping, banking, research or general browsing, is all far better there.

Trying to do anything involved, like compare and buy car insurance on my phone, feels utterly crippling - as if I'm operating at 20% efficiency, and I can feel my fingers burning with frustration at how much quicker I'd be with a keyboard, trackpad, and decent multitasking.

Big purchases require big screen. I have spoken.

Anything over 50-100€ is not getting bought in a phone.

People in this thread are answering the picture of a reddit post....

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

Yeah it's supposed to be sarcastic responses only. I was coming here to say "My age, apparently."

[–] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 18 points 15 hours ago

Literally everything that punk and grunge tried to warn us about in the 80s and 90s regarding corporatism becoming reality and everyone being okay with it as long as they have shiny new toys to play with every year.

The fanatical rise of facism, racism and mysoginy

[–] blockheadjt@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 hours ago

Not exactly new

I keep getting pulled back to the manic street preachers song, if you tolerate this, your children will be next

Young sailors and officers I trained are now in the process of training even younger sailors and officers.

Everything constantly getting worse at an accelerating rate.

Like I've not been hopeful since about 2006

[–] umbrellacloud@leminal.space 2 points 15 hours ago

Oh, no...I'm old...

"Create an account to continue" being considered normal for everything.

They're so certain they even dropped the "please" at this point.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

There were plenty of "log-in to view this image/link" back then. Some forums still do that abuse.

[–] KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 day ago

I fucking hate forums that do this shit.

[–] AnnaFrankfurter@lemmy.ml 26 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Also you need an app for even the most basic things

[–] HexesofVexes@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

Yeah, app-gating is something I struggle against.

[–] SpikesOtherDog@ani.social 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

App-controlled appliances are absolutely one of my pet peeves. I would much rather prefer an analog knob.

[–] wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

We still have zero app-controlled (or internet-capable) appliances and I hope to keep it that way forever.. though I'm starting to worry that maybe in the future we won't have much choice.

[–] SpikesOtherDog@ani.social 5 points 19 hours ago

Yeah, I still opt for the 'lower-cost' options when buying appliances. There is always the used market, so by the time I must but one I'll probably have a strategy ready to go.

Maybe I'll have an old phone I'll put on a separate vlan WiFi with a special account just for that. A service account, if you will.

Normies on the internet.

It used to be exclusively nerds, geeks, freaks, and weirdos.

I miss those days 😮‍💨

I'm no longer friends with MySpace Tom.

[–] BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk 1 points 10 hours ago

Yeah, fuck that smug bastard off living his best life travelling round the world taking photos after extracting a ton of money from Rupert Murdoch.

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 135 points 2 days ago (25 children)

That the internet is not a good thing.

Twenty years ago, even some more, the internet was something that brought me hope for humanity: A democratic network of knowledge open to anyone for both participation and access. I truly expected this to improve the lifes of those in less fortunate countries and backgrounds, and help reduce conflicts between people by understanding each other.

Yeah, a bit too much "we are the world", but you read about the pioneers of the internet and this was a shared belief.

Turns out it was like Cyberpunk, but like boring.

[–] BranBucket@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Yup. The Internet was going to demolish barriers and let people communicate mind to mind without prejudice. We were going to democratize information and science, put the power in the hands of the people, and put an end to pointless conflicts.

Far fetched? Sure. But we should never forget what they stole from us. The most complex and powerful machine humanity has ever created, a collaborative project built in the spirit of cooperation and empowerment, is being monoplized and exploited so some high functioning sociopaths can get rich.

[–] Omega_Jimes@lemmy.ca 3 points 17 hours ago

This is a really upsetting thing.

I grew up with "not everything on the internet is real" but it seems all the people that told me this forgot it.

I was promised access to the whole of human knowledge, but everyone ignores it because we've been trained not to read critically.

Yeah now-a-days the internet is a surveilled corporate hellscape. People in power are trying to make it moreso (age verification, war on encryption, etc).

Nothing. I'm thirty, not retarded.

[–] foodandart@lemmy.zip 4 points 23 hours ago

LOL! I know the feeling. Am 61 and no "modern" things phase me.

Holding a mobile telephone horizontally in front of yourself and shouting at it, then moving it to the side of your head, holding it sticking out from your ear horizontally to listen to what the other person says... instead of just holding it in one place to do both, like a telephone.

I mean the question stings a little but ultimately times have changed quite a bit since the 90s. And I'm 30 so that's all my last century reference. Genuinely one I didn't expect is so much stuff like fashion, music and whatnot from my childhood being this popular among today's teenagers. Also people used to be more considerate using public transport. Listening to music on speaker was almost unheard of and now it happens all the time around me. Oh and restaurants with qr code only menus can piss right off.

[–] themaninblack@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago

What in the FUCK is with the lack of basic consideration for others not wanting to hear your phone on public transit?!

The resurgence of the mullet is simply not acceptable. It was terrible then, it is terrible now. You look like a moron.

Coal rollers. The active embrace of our collective demise.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

The one and only time I encountered one was when I was in my WRX with my newborn in the back. Blew black smoke in front of me on the highway at highway speeds. Sped through the smoke because WRX, had a half empty frappucino bottle next to me and whipped it out the window at the laughing passenger, catching him in the forehead. WRX was too fast to know what happened after that.

Return of nicotine addiction of the youth.

Latest trend besides the god damned vapes: nicotine-infused toothpicks the kids in 7th grade are casually twirling around their mouths during class.

Answer's easy though. Signing up to advertisement delivery platforms, wether it be TikTok, or YouTube or even Amazon Prime with comemrcials.

[–] ccunning@lemmy.world 73 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Basically everything on the internet now we would have called “spyware” before 2000…
