They're so close to curing T1 diabetes and I'm rooting for them. If I live to see the insulin/diabetes medical device manufacturers go bankrupt I may achieve nirvana

It would be so much fun watching western media try to spin curing cancer as an evil communist plot though.

[–] TrustedFeline@hexbear.net 60 points 1 month ago

Go ahead and get your commie jab! I'm gonna cure my cancer with ivermectin and benzene

[–] vovchik_ilich@hexbear.net 33 points 1 month ago (1 children)

We've literally seen this with COVID haven't we?

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 32 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah the Chinese and Russian vaccines came out like a year ahead of the US ones and the media just fearmongered about them not being safe

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 27 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Whenever "The Commies" beat America to a medical breakthrough, it's indeed very fun to watch the Red Scare nonsense spewed by Western media.

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 32 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I've noticed there's a lot of racism involved too; I recall the media's initial mockery and skepticism of Cuba when they revealed they'd had success with a lung cancer vaccine, or mockery of Iran in regards to their ability to reverse engineer drones, claiming no one there had the skills for it.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

Yeah. That side of it is just sad and frustrating, the Red Scare type nonsense is at least funny.

Eating burnt red meat while smoking reds with the filters ripped out to stick it to Beijing.

You just know the CIA is cooking up a supercancer that can beat the cure.

[–] jizzong@hexbear.net 34 points 1 month ago

Sorry, can't have free healthcare cause CIA needs all the money to develop new ways to make people sick.

It'd be cool to be surprised by this, but I kinda think "curing" cancer is nearly a big a fantasy as AGI. What is there to cure? Cells being damaged? Treatment will continue to be refined, sure, but don't expect to ever see a panacea.

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

also,

smart export controls that target the critical inputs for China's technological and military machine

YOU DID THAT ALREADY AND GOT FUCK ALL TO SHOW FOR IT WHAAT ARE YOU TALKING ABUT

You make a little robot and tell it to go in there and get that cancer

[–] huf@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago (2 children)

you make a submarine and put a dude in it and shrink the whole thing and inject it into the patient, like in that documentary i saw

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Well yeah if you're american workers lives are cheaper than robots

yeah "cancer" is a pattern of cellular behavior and the causes of it are myriad and depend on the type of cell that's fucking up.

there's almost certainly never going to be a generic cure or prevention for all cancers. maybe some scifi shit with human cloning and brain transplants but that's not fixing the cancer in the body that has it.

natsec is when you can't let anyone else do anything that benefits anyone because that means they have one over on you

[–] TrustedFeline@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

I have a competition in me. I want no one else to succeed. I hate most people

I'd rather see a million dead kids from cancer then even entertain the idea of CHYNER curing it.

[–] Riffraffintheroom@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago

Openly speaking like a Captain Planet villain.
