DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin denied the claims that Bovino had been relieved of his duties as Border Patrol ‘commander at large,’ which was first reported by The Atlantic

Border Patrol “commander at large” Gregory Bovino has been removed from his role and will return back to his old job in California, according to reports.

Bovino, who has been heavily involved in crackdowns on immigration across the country, will return to El Centro and is expected to retire soon, a DHS official and two other sources told The Atlantic.

It comes following the recent chaotic events in Minneapolis, in which two protesters have been shot dead by federal agents in less than three weeks. Renee Nicole Good was shot by an ICE agent on January 7 and ICU nurse Alex Pretti was killed Saturday.

They want us to forget about him so he's not held accountable. If we hold him accountable then future people in positions like his might second guess their decisions.

[–] JTskulk@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Go retire from this mortal coil you gravy seals wannabe.

[–] CaliforniaSober@lemmy.ca 92 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (3 children)

Hey Greg? Why don’t you go back to MN afterwards and walk the streets? See how much safer you must feel, how effective you were that you should put on your SS trench coat and go tour what is clearly just another US state. Should be fine no? I mean you made it safer there right?

[–] extremeboredom@lemmy.world 37 points 4 days ago

Scum like Bovino don't live with actual risk like the rest of us. The current admin will protect him. He is also wealthy already and after his exit can simply pay for ongoing security by jumping into the rightwing media grift machine. He will shit out a book, do some podcasts and the LEO conference speaking circuit, and never need to worry for his safety like the people he and his fascist organization have threatened and brutalized.

[–] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Unless he's on some kind of regular protection I wouldn't be surprised if someone in California takes it upon themselves to dispatch of this guy. Unfortunate that he (most likely) won't ever stand trial.

Honestly, it doesn't matter where he goes. His ren and stimpy face has been plastered everywhere smiling and sig hieling like an idiot.

Calling it now:

This is a bid from the GOP to convince Dems to fund DHS and stop the shutdown from happening.

And the dumb ass Dems might actually take the bait and pretend its a victory

[–] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 22 points 4 days ago

That’s exactly what they are going to fucking do.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

And the dumb ass Dems might actually take the bait and pretend its a victory

Might? It's almost a certainty at this point 😮‍💨

[–] Jack_Burton@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago

Calling the democrats dumb like they don't know exactly what they're doing too is why the US is collapsing. They're not dumb, they're complicit. Always have been. The other side of the coin is still the same coin.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

My understanding is that a shutdown would not stop ICE. They would not be part of that.

[–] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago (2 children)

The Dems have made a list of demands about ICE, the DHS and Border Patrol, that ultimately amount to not even a wrist slap.

The GOP is refusing to move an inch on it.

The Dems are now threatening a shutdown if their demands aren't met.

Now the Dems are colossal pussies, so they'll likely capitulate again. That being said, Trump and the rest of the fascists know they took the bigger reputation L with the last shutdown, and they're afraid of another.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

We need to seriously just take a list of schumer's investments and boycott them all until he grows a spine. That motherfucker is so upset when stock price go down that he's repeatedly sold out the public on funding ICE

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 days ago

Yes, but ICE and CPB are already funded, and would continue to operate during a government shutdown, unless I'm mistaken.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 3 points 3 days ago

They got 200 billion last year.

Oh no! The 1/3 Reich is leaving.

[–] cv_octavio@piefed.ca 2 points 2 days ago

I prefer he be REVOKED instead of being allowed to retire. And I mean "revoked" here as in the court finds life itself to be in contempt of him and is ordered here forthwith to remain no closer than 500 yards from his body.

[–] Insekticus@aussie.zone 41 points 4 days ago (2 children)

But he only got to use his SS-wannabe coat in one photo op. This is hardly fair.

spoiler/s

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

fair

I first read that as flair. As in Trump fired him because he didn't have enough pieces of flair on. Like, Trump was counting and only saw 6 piece of fascist flair, and well..

[–] IamSparticles@lemmy.zip 7 points 4 days ago

That's the minimum, Greg. Do you want to go through life just doing the minimum?

He's worn that shit dozens of times.

[–] Bob_Robertson_IX@discuss.tchncs.de 40 points 4 days ago (5 children)

I hope he lives long enough to stand trial once a same government reemerges. Would love to see this fucker prosecuted and standing before a firing squad.

[–] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 15 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

He won't. The border patrol has killed hundreds of people over the years and it's not going to suddenly start mattering anytime soon.

Only reason we know this dude is because he's especially stupid about it, just like his boss.

[–] 100_kg_90_de_belin@feddit.it 7 points 4 days ago

You hang them like common criminals, you don't shoot them like soldiers:

Göring made an appeal asking to be shot as a soldier instead of hanged as a common criminal, but the court refused.

[–] Manjushri@piefed.social 8 points 4 days ago

To paraphrase my betters, I would never wish a man dead but I long to read this fuckers obituary. Ah, who am I kidding. I'm wishing as hard as I can for more than a few of these guys shuck their mortal coils.

Instead of "could retire" make it "will be jailed"

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Jail is too nice

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

The apple is rotten to the core. Taking this sadistic MF out isn’t going to fix anything when they’ve given all the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys badges and paychecks.

[–] jontree255@lemmy.world 21 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Good, but ICE is still operating in Twin Cities and is also targeting to Maine now. The pressure on elected officials to abolish ICE and DHS must continue. DHS funding must be stripped.

Bovino was alway going to be a fall guy and this isn’t nearly enough punishment for him. Jonathan Ross is still at large and the officers that executed Alex Pretti are still out there.

Retire and leave the country

[–] brownsugga@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

We as a country really need to bring back tarring and feathering, and maybe stakeburning…. If they can ignore the bill of rights so can we

All I know is, thanks to how much this man is hated. I now know he was caught in the high school library jorkin it to a Nat Geo mag...

[–] vane@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Probably millionaire at this point.

[–] fittedsyllabi@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago
[–] uberdroog@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

He will probably move to Brazil.

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 4 days ago

We need to track him down and make his life hell.

[–] IAmYouButYouDontKnowYet@reddthat.com 14 points 4 days ago (5 children)

Tldr. ...do they mean retire as in his life force being lost?

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 12 points 4 days ago

He's going to try and escape responsibility.

Leave the job, go elsewhere for a bit and quietly retire so he's forgotten as the shit continues under someone else.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 10 points 4 days ago

You know that scene in Iron Man where Tony leaves the one terrorist to the families? "He's all yours."

Just saying, that's a great scene.

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 7 points 4 days ago

He's ... 56? now, and mandatory retirement age is 57, so he was planning to leave soon anyway. This is just him being moved off the board in an attempt to reset public opinion regarding ICE operations and de-escalate the resistance.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 days ago

"He needs to be retired" is not the same as retiring.

THERE WILL BE ANOTHER SHITHEAD RIGHT BEHIND HIM when the fuck will you people get it. Tear the cancer out at the root

[–] Hubbubbub@fedia.io 6 points 4 days ago

He should be fired... out of a canon... into the sun. (That's a "Futurama" reference for those who are likely to overreact)

[–] tehn00bi@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Whoever called him a Christmas adventurer, I can’t unsee it now.
