Real talk, I would give so much up to keep my AC in the degrowth future. I will eat ze bugs. I will live in ze pod (as long as it's temperature controlled)

ACs are necessary (in many climates) and will only become more so. ACs are the main reason why Singapore was able to develop in the 60s while other equatorial cities developed less

Heat pumps are fine.

Actually, heat pumps are amazing and should be everywhere. They're so incredibly efficient, and could absolutely be run with solar (especially since the times you really need them tend to be when it's sunny)

Yay I won't have to eat the bugs!!!

dish washer man says heat pump heat is less efficient than heat pump cool, and that aircons are heat pumps.

Any country subsidizing heat pumps which can only heat has created policy based on a misunderstanding of the technology which itself comes from ignorance re: the energy mix of a power grid and historical heating fuels.

This part might be a bit misleading. I don't think any of the heat pump subsidies exclude heat pumps that can cool.

I've seen this type of discourse amongst the libs as well. It boggles my mind. Instead of sympathy and empathy, they show abject apathy. I don't think these people understand that Europe's climate generally doesn't get hot enough to need air conditioning and that it's somewhat excessive. This is such an aberration and outlier from the average that there simply was no preparing for something this severe.

For example, average June highs in the following European cities:

Paris: 75F/24C

Brandenburg: 73F/23C

London: 71F/21.5C

Lisbon: 78F/25.5C

Milan: 82F/27.5

Toulouse: 78F/25.5C

Zürich: 74F/23C

Madrid: 83F/28.5C

Prague: 76F/24.5C

Amsterdam: 68F/20C

Now, let's do some American cities:

Baltimore: 85F/29.5C

New York City: 80F/26.5C

Los Angeles: 79F/26C

Louisville: 86F/30C

Salt Lake City: 83F/28.5C

Pittsburgh: 81F/27C

Dallas: 94F/34.5C

Minneapolis: 80F/ 26.5C

I chose most of the cities at random, though tried to vary between regions on both sides. I was actually surprised by how high some of these were.

As you can see, the average high temperature in the US is higher than in most of Europe. They don't generally need AC and it really is unnecessary for the most part. When temperatures stray that far from the average, what can you really do?

It's about the Eurolibs mocking Americans for using AC and drinking ice water all the time. Americans, like Australians, understand the dangers of heat that Northern Europeans don't. There is this weird sect of Euros (Germans and Brits mostly) that seem to take pride in not using AC who are now melting and dying in drives because of it. I saw something yesterday that said German hospitals were asking patient families to bring cooling towels and vests because it was getting so hot in operating rooms. I have no clue what would cause Germans to be building hospitals without climate control other than hubiris.

Edit: these heat waves are not aberrations anymore as they happen every year.

It does just seem really cruel. We had a very hot summer here in Australia, and even when these people in Europe are complaining about 35 degree days and not 40 degree ones, it's still really hot and really unpleasant, especially when the infrastructure isn't built to handle it at all. It would be one thing to laugh at them for self-inflicted suffering, but not when it is something out of their control like this. And if this is how these people react to Europeans having a hot summer, I can't imagine how disgusting their reaction will be to South East Asia having a wet bulb event.

[–] GrafZahl@hexbear.net 1 points 5 hours ago

At least a few places inland EU had 40/41°C peak. I dont doubt it gets a lot hotter in AUS though.

Never underestimate the USAan desire to feel superior to others for completely dunderheaded reasons

Sick of the narrative being otherwise. But I fucking hate how among everyone, AmeriKKKa is a sacred cow you’re not allowed to make fun of.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 8 points 21 hours ago

This is why when I did stand-up, I did my 50 Hates of America bit only in places where I knew i wouldn't get a beer bottle whipped at my head

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 16 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

As if the amerikkkan electric grid wouldn't fail in the heat, it fails every time it gets cold.

Europe when Texans were freezing to death in 2021:
