I read about that site a little while ago! The datacenter is in Tennessee: https://maps.app.goo.gl/shpHnsqrQkz8g4cWA. And the power generation is one mile south, over the state border in Mississippi: https://maps.app.goo.gl/wR1e4YkqrhVcUJTi6. They built the datacenter (Colossus-2) in the building of a previous warehouse and the power plant on the site of a previous gas plant. Apparently they rent the gas turbines, that’s how they got them in place so quickly.

They are doing the same shitty trick as with Colossus-1 again, “those turbines are totally temporary and mobile, so we don’t need permits for a year”. MDEQ has confirmed for a while that there were 46 unpermitted turbines..

The real news in the Reuters report the Tomshardware article is based on, is that they got model numbers, and did the calculations for an estimate of the pollution. It's quite extreme, the size of those bars versus the line that displays the usual environmental limits.

Ooo I wrote a paper for a uni project and this issue came up and it is depressing. Data centers near black and brown communities do this exact practice all the time. Even if the electric grid can support the data center without issue, they will still turn on gas generators. With the sole purpose of adding additional pollution to the area, just to harm minorities. Meanwhile they will not do the same to white communities. It’s pure racism, through and through. It’s not just Musk, it’s every billionaire, it’s every data center owner.

That would mean they are wasting money, which is just about the most important thing not to do, so I doubt it.

Perhaps there is an explanation that is a bit more sensible. But I have zero data for data centers turbine use, let alone near minorities.

It could be strategic. Pollute the environment in poor communities that can't afford to fight it until it drives down property value, then buy the property and use it to generate even more profit.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Is this actually documented? It's not like there's a shortage of land

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

But the pollution they create is pretty much only CO2? So climate issue but not locally like NOx, SO2 or particulates.

and noise pollution and CH4 from fugitive emissions and heat

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Okay, noise is a local issue. But much? I don't think their emissions matter locally. Let alone so much that it drives down property values.

It's not done with intent, just supreme neglect. Data centers that use this as a primary energy source shouldn't exist. Data centers that have these as a backup to grid power have a legitimate reason for it.

[–] oxysis@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 days ago

That is where you are, unfortunately, wrong. The generators may be used under the pretext of being incase the power grid fails. However even under circumstances where they shouldn’t need to be operated. And I shall repeat myself here, only seems to be done in black and brown communities to harm the environment in those specific areas. So, no. It is not “supreme neglect”, but done with intent and with prejudice to the minority groups who were already living in the area.

TLDR: No it’s racism, you shill.

Who cares; these people aren't rich, white, males.

  • Elon Musky
[–] Jimbabwe@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Hey to be fair, Musk cares about only sorta rich white people if they’re South African immigrants skipping the line to move to America ahead of more deserving people!

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 1 points 3 days ago

Musky did care about attending an Epstein Party.

Burn the fucker down and revisit it after elon jumps the required hoops (are there any hoops left to jump nowadays?).

[–] bloogoose@lemmy.zip 19 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Maybe Mississippians should burn it to the ground. We could all really benefit from some collective action, eh? Not yet? OK.

If there isn't enough power Grok can't run and if Grok doesn't run peophiles cannot generate any child porn. Sure black people are getting sick but think of the poor pedophiles.

How so many people can still drive around in newer Teslas without absolute ridicule is beyond me. Why don't people use their free speech that Musk claims to support, but doesn't, to ensure Tesla drivers never hear the end of how awful of humans they are.

[–] BigMacHole@thelemmy.club 6 points 4 days ago

It's a GOOD thing we Personally Give him BILLIONS of Taxpayer Dollars EVERY year! OTHERWISE he'd be Poor and this would be ILLEGAL!

impact black communities

White people are immune?

[–] Fluke@feddit.uk 1 points 2 days ago

.....

They didn't build the turbine halls in white communities, therefore it doesn't impact them.

Take your "curious" bullshit elsewhere.

Sorry, there is a lot of subtext here that is easy to miss. Black people are the ones who live in black communities.
