That's the most suspicious thing I've heard since the uhaul truck outside Bricks and Minfigs during the hostile takeover where thousands of dollars worth of LEGO went missing

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 83 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Only 2 more days then we get to find out.

[–] thanksforallthefish@literature.cafe 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

As a non american I didnt catch what the deadline was they were pretending he was alive to avoid. Would you mind explaining what happens in a couple of days ?

[–] DeathbringerThoctar@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago (2 children)

August 3rd is the deadline after which it's officially too late for a special election to replace him before the next regular election.

[–] MisterD@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

How does having a corpse representing Kentucky be better? Can the GOP keep control of his vote?

[–] Syndication@lemmy.today 28 points 1 day ago (2 children)

They're scared a real candidate will do their job competently, so they would rather have a dead man representing them. Ya know, just republicans trying to obstruct democracy as per usual (somehow, this is all been normalized in the USA)

[–] abigscaryhobo@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago

I do want to clarify as a Kentuckian, we do not want a dead man representing us. The republican party officials don't want someone else. Most of Kentucky Dems and reps are getting pissed that he's basically been pulling a "Weekend at Bernie's" for 40+ days. It's likely even with a special election that another Republican would still get elected. But people are still pissed this farce is happening

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Someone on Lemmy said that using his death to mislead the public, stymie democracy and play procedural shenanigans against the Democrats is definitely how he would have wanted to go.

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Anyone a who knows anything about that asshole thought the same thing. Is probably in his end of life directives.

[–] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How much power does Kentucky have??

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

About one Kentucky's worth I think.

[–] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

More then one Puerto Rico.

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 5 points 1 day ago

Well yes nothing is not much.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago

Rather before the deadline, the Governor would get to appoint a caretaker to the seat.

[–] thanksforallthefish@literature.cafe 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thanks, and I assume the upcoming mid terms are not a "regular election" in this context - it's the voting round in 2 years ?

Or are they really that determined to hold the seat for an extra month or so ? Mid terms are Nov right ? And a special election would be at least a couple of months from death to the replacement poll ?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Or are they really that determined to hold the seat for an extra month or so ? Mid terms are Nov right ?

Yeah. The thing is that Thomas Massie would be amongst the favorites and they will stop at nothing to keep him away from any power.

[–] thanksforallthefish@literature.cafe 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Won't he just win in Nov then ? I mean I guess a month.or two is time to get some stuff voted through but is it really worth all this cover up ?

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The way I understand it, which is vaguely, Massie already lost the primary or something so he can't run in the regular election. But he could run in a special election, which would divide the republican base and help a democrat to win.

It is convoluted though, and beyond my limited comprehension of political complexities. Republicans tend to be very underhanded like this though, so republican-controlled states have convoluted laws which enable them to do these kinds of shenanigans.

Thank you

That makes sense

In their opinion, it clearly is.

I guess they have some really nefarious stuff they wish to force through before possibly losing the majority and don't think Massey would go for it.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Before Aug 3 there would have been a special election to replace him. After Aug 3 it's only 3 months to the midterms so there's a local law there that it gets rolled up with the midterms.

[–] dellish@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So what im hearing is he will be pronounced dead on Aug 4th? This really is some disgusting, macabre shit if so.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Yes and yes.

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's not a casket. It's his new form.

It's perfectly normal to have a cocoon phase during a regular metamorphosis.

Lich McConnell

I was about to criticize you but honestly given the fucking clownshow of a country the US is right now, if this was a real picture it wouldn't even be that much more unbelievable than everything else going on

[–] Ariselas@piefed.ca 32 points 1 day ago (3 children)

letters on the sign are legible, and she has the correct number of fingers, well if it's fake, it's better than any of the proof of life images.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think the AI bullshit has made people so dumb they forgot we could edit photos in the past, without them. This is not a generated image I don't think, but I believe it is a Photoshop edit.

[–] HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

I don't know what his wife looks like or what the building she's walking out of is, so it wouldn't even take Photoshop to produce a convincing fake for me; just claim it's his wife and if I don't look it up I'd have no idea.

I know most people could name every Kardashian but I kinda doubt they're as familiar with Mrs. McConnell.

[–] HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

You're behind the times; that was an excellent way to identify AI photos in 2023.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

the vehicle and the person do appear to me to be a 'photoshop' job (pasted onto the image of the building in the background)

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It is. I'm the one who sold her the casket and mothballs.

[–] testaccount789@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Can confirm, I am the car in the photo.

Can confirm, am the potted plant behind her

[–] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Once you join the realm of the undead, the biggest problem is what to do with all those extra caskets you don't need, so I feel for them

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Honestly, no idea. But the head looks photoshoped, and also, you can't really identify the person there.

But I would completely accept it if some paper said she was caught buying a coffin.

[–] b34k@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Looks fake af

What if we just go ahead doing things as if he is dead? Not like he is going to sue us.

I'm very turned on by this woman's hands. Can anyone provide high resolution pictures of this woman's hands? Asking for my AI dataset gathering as I am totally not an LLM but really a forest munchkin of the toaboola koola race of degenerate munchkin ball hpg munchg go baxk reprogrammed over max klinge4 go home headspace monk dixk Tracy go home repborm bitc

Yeah, back in June. But we don't get to say that for another couple days.

[–] Insekticus@aussie.zone 2 points 1 day ago

I can see it now, all the media companies journos just sitting at their desks on their own articls, with bated breath, just needing to change the date in the text and bam.

They know exactly what's happened, they're just toeing the line.
