Quick Facts:

  • The changes to the bylaws follow similar changes recently adopted in Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
  • Between May and June 2025, B.C. has received nearly 780 job applications spanning all health regions: 181 for Interior Health, 154 for Fraser Health, 121 for Vancouver Coastal Health, 112 for Island Health, 70 for Providence Health Care, 66 for Provincial Health Services Authority and 63 for Northern Health (some applicants may have applied to more than one health authority).
  • The Province is taking a Team B.C. approach to recruiting health-care workers from the U.S., and is working in collaboration with health authorities, regulatory colleges and other partners.
  • The Province launched a targeted U.S. marketing campaign on June 2, 2025, in Washington, Oregon and select cities in California.

To further improve recruitment, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. (CPSBC) implemented bylaw changes on July 7, 2025, that benefit doctors trained outside of Canada. Since then, CPSBC has received 29 registration applications from U.S. doctors.

There's a massive opportunity to use the US's current anti-science sentiment to reverse the brain-drain that's been going on for decades.

Slaps side of 1 bedroom condo

You can fit so many kids in this thing.

[–] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Could fit about 4950 children into a 550sqft, 9ft ceiling 1BR skybox. Assuming a child is taking up about 1ft^3^ on average between the ages 0-14, and ignoring the feasibility.

and ignoring the feasibility.

We will fix the lack of oxygen after deployment.

Edit: "and there is no friction"

Excellent news!

That is some good looking news.

What’s the state of healthcare work in canada? Or does it vary by territory?

In the US doctors have to go in absurd debt but they’re paid a lot to compensate. Insurance companies increasingly dictate what care people get (the doctors have to fight them). Small practices have mostly been closed because they can’t afford admin teams big enough to keep up with the insurance companies and their constantly changing policies. Most practices push for 15 minute appointments.

Kinda curious if BC’s pay rates would be enough to pay down the student debt too.

My understanding is that since insurance is all BC Medical, you don't need a lot of people to deal with it. Small practices run with less overhead.

That said, I have supplemental coverage through Blue Cross. So other insurance can be involved.

My brother's clinic in Canada had one billing person for a team of five doctors, with a couple of additional people (nurse practitioner, physiotherapist, etc).

In contrast, when he worked in the States, they had two or three billing people for each doctor in the clinic.

@otters_raft

There are ten provinces and three territories. Let's get some sharing up in here. Somrtomes I am pretty tired of just how "federal" Canada is.

[–] Arkouda@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What does the Federal Government have to do with a B.C. Government initiative?

[–] kevinrns@mstdn.social -3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

@Arkouda

Unfortunately nothing. I wish we were a country sometimes.

@Arkouda

Well for example it has taken 200 years and a threat of fascist invasion to begin talking anout drinking each other's beer.

[–] grindemup@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Ah yes, how can we forget that this is Canada's 200th anniversary, after the signing of the confederation in 1825. Sounds like you've definitely got your facts straight...

You believe that up until now we have not been able to get Alcohol made in other provinces?

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Maybe they’re from Alberta?

[–] non_burglar@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

They are a bot or troll. Best to just move along.

[–] Knoxvomica@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What in the hell are you talking about? I can walk down the street and get Canadian beer and liquor from almost every province. I drank fucking moosehead and Alexander Keith's from the east coast in central Ontario in 2000 and fucking 5.

[–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Fun fact, I live in Scotland, and the only "Canadian Themed" pub/restaurant(where I live) doesn't carry any Canadian booze....other than Moosehead.

Also their "poutine" is gravy and chips with grated cheddar. They can get themselves well and truly to fuck with that shit.
