Three downtown Las Vegas hotels have begun accepting the Canadian dollar at par with the American dollar in an effort to spur Canuck travel.

Circa Resort and Casino, the D Las Vegas and Golden Gate Hotel and Casino have launched the “At Par Program,” which runs until Aug. 31.

“Everybody (in Las Vegas) is talking about really the same thing,” CEO Derek Stevens tells CTV News. “There’s clearly something missing, and that’s the lack of Canadian tourism.”

“We miss our best friends.”

The hotels will all offer on par accommodation and drink prices.

They’ll also allow Canadian guests to redeem up to $500 CAD in slot play, treated at full USD value.

...

The promos will require a valid Canadian passport or government-issued ID.

Stevens says he understands the deal still won’t be enough for many travellers but he hopes some rethink their American boycott.

“Canadian tourism, on a monthly basis, has been down anywhere from 25 to 50 per cent,” he said. “And I realize sometimes when best friends or allies have a spat — yes, they have a spat, but it doesn’t mean everybody wants to fight.“

...

Stevens’ plea comes amidst a massive downturn for the Nevada city.

Data from the Harry Reid International Airport shows ten straight months of declines — with the biggest culprit being flights out of Canada. The country typically makes up Vegas’ largest international market by a wide margin.

The slowing travel demand can be linked directly back to the re-election of U.S. President Donald Trump and the trade war he started.

Recent Abacus Data figures show among those Canadians who have not travelled south in the past year, 34 per cent “thought about going but ultimately decided against it because of their feelings about Trump or about how the U.S. is treating Canada.”

Abacus says that works out to roughly 23 per cent of Canadian adults overall.

Only down 50%. Shameful. Canadians need to do better.

[–] podian@piefed.social 17 points 1 month ago

Get those numbers up!

Geuss Trump wasn't satisfied with only bankrupting his own casinos.

[–] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If Trump could read, he would need so much burn cream and a WWAAAHHHHmbulance for this comment. 10/10 chef's kiss, no notes.

Also Vegas:

The agreement, known as 287(g), creates a partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) where local law enforcement officers are deputized to carry out federal immigration duties. However, Berkley said that she didn’t push Sheriff Kevin McMahill one way or the other before he joined the program.

“Come here! Give us your money! Possibly be sent to a death camp!”

“We'll even give you the slightest of discounts!”

Pathetic.

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 month ago

Not the stakes you want when you go to Vegas.

As someone still begrudgingly living in America as a US Citizen, fuck us up Canada

[–] TheGoldenV@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago

Agreed. This lesson needs to be taught to the nth degree.

[–] podian@piefed.social 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

As a Canadian I'm still naively holding out for some kind of resolution that improves conditions for ordinary people on both sides of the border. Or at least stabilizes them.

One of the most sombering lessons is how innocence is the first casualty. In the worst case scenario, no one can keep their hands clean by this conflict's end.

[–] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 49 points 1 month ago (1 children)

As an American, I'm glad the US is suffering. Since 33% of our population is stupid/racist/homophobic/transphobic and just overall pieces of shit, the only way they will change is experiencing the consequences of exactly what they voted for. Thank you Canada for the find out phase at least 1/3 of us Americans deserve. I'm not happy about how financially fucked over I'm going to be, but I will take one for the team if it means putting a stop to Trump, American Imperialism, and fascism.

[–] Reannlegge@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 month ago

Those who did not put an x on the ballet also voted for this, because of how your system works (unlike Canada’s) those who put an x by the third party leader voted for this. In Canada we do not vote for our leader we vote for our riding, well if you want to be all technical we could vote for our leader if we paid whatever the price is and joined the party to vote for the parties leader. What I am saying is in the US how your system works third party votes are throw away votes in Canada they are not.

[–] shapeofthings@piefed.ca 48 points 1 month ago

As a Canadian... Fuck off.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 47 points 1 month ago

They couldn’t pay me to visit.

[–] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 42 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Sure I could get Canadian currency at par but I could end up in an El Salvador death camp. I guess it adds an extra layer of gambling on top of the blackjack table!

"we'll give you like a 20% discount because WE MISS YOU! All you have to do is cross the border, risk being detained and sent to Ecuador or something if your paperwork isn't perfect or you're brown or if you've ever said anything online that disparages Dear Leader, and if you do get across the border you'll get to enjoy visiting a fascist state with roaming bands of masked thugs grabbing people off the streets. Why won't you come stay in our hotel? WE MISS YOU!"

[–] runsmooth@kopitalk.net 37 points 1 month ago

People are still getting detained for what appears to be arbitrary reasons related to their skin colour, and these detentions have led to violent incidents carried out by agents of the state. Even if you survive the initial arrest, the detention centres also appear to be lawless. Detainees are subject to additional violence or sexual violence, and the conditions are inhumane.

Vegas offers to be a honey pot for a conflict zone. Any sane person would rather visit another civilization.

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 31 points 1 month ago

If you miss us so much, come visit us and spend your money in Canada.

[–] FenderStratocaster@lemmy.world 28 points 1 month ago

I'd sooner go to New Vegas with Deathclaws roaming around.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 26 points 1 month ago

Three downtown Las Vegas hotels have begun accepting the Canadian dollar at par with the American dollar in an effort to spur Canuck travel.

Yeah that won't do shit. Canadians kinda have had it with their Southern neighbor shenanigans. Wanna boost tourism to Las Vegas?

Hang a certain unnamed person from a bridge there, Canadians will come back and watch

[–] asg101@lemmy.ca 26 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Anyone who still travels to the Fourth Reich (without a life or death reason) is an open supporter of fascism. They deserve whatever happens to them.

I hope Americans visiting Las Vegas start changing their money to CAD to take advantage of this little arbitrage opportunity!

[–] I_am_10_squirrels@beehaw.org 8 points 1 month ago

Canadian passport or ID required

[–] ArmchairAce1944@lemmy.ca 24 points 1 month ago

Still not going. Sorry.

[–] ZiggyTheZygote@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's sad and pathetic. Maybe trump can bail them out.

[–] Reannlegge@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You think he is going to give up any of his personal wealth he has saved away in offshore banks from the sale of the oil he pirated from those Venezuela ships do you?

[–] ZiggyTheZygote@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago

Imagine that.

[–] bowreality@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 month ago

Thoughts and prayers. Nope.

[–] Zexks@lemmy.world 19 points 1 month ago

The beginning of the fall of the dollar. Funny it starts in vegas

[–] funksoulkitchen@lemmy.zip 18 points 1 month ago

They miss the $

[–] AGM@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 month ago

They could cover the flight and give 100% off accommodations. Wouldn't make a difference. Not going back. There's a big world of places I would much rather spend time in and I'm at peace with never going to the US again.

[–] Eddbopkins@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

CEO Derek Stevens tells CTV News. “We miss our best friends.”

did CEO Derek Stevens vote for trump? if yes, well then, vagas deserves to fail.

in no way shape or form is the trump administration a friend of the Canadian. i refer to this post. no friend undermines another nation like the US does. https://lemmy.world/post/42062068

[–] Medic8teMe@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Haven't been to the US since Bush Jr. My kids have never been there and we encourage them to stay away, espcially the past decade or so. They do.

Good luck fascist hellhole.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 6 points 1 month ago (3 children)

the article gloss over the fact that there is also a lack of usa tourism to vegas, and also vegas has been suffering for many years already because they overpriced everything a while ago.

No thanks, I’m not going fascist fun town.

[–] ProgrammingSocks@pawb.social 14 points 1 month ago

LOL they're SO desperate. We're not coming back

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago

Who did Nevada vote for in the last election...? Oh that's right...

Fuck you, your gambling, your shit weather. You did this to yourself and are fucking over the entire nation. I am glad your businesses are failing, tourism is in the toilet, and that Canada is wisely choosing to spend their money at a better place.

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

They'll do anything but address the problem in Washington.

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

The US can seriously get fucked. They like our $ that is all. Shithole country.

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 month ago

Nice try, ICE.

From my understanding is even if shit was fine Vegas would still be suffering as they have been bleeding guests for years as it gets more overpriced
