This is a rerelease of a 2008 remake of a 1996 game.

In a reasonable market economy this kind of shit would be public domain.

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 32 points 4 days ago (4 children)

sanae-boomer FRLG is a recent remake right? The GBA was only two handheld consoles ago?

Stop, Anakin. You're hurting me

[–] RisingSwell@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 4 days ago

Ignoring the switch that's technically handheld, 2 handhelds ago is likely a 3ds variant.

[–] kadu@scribe.disroot.org 80 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I do agree the whole "oh no I'm just emulating to preserve games that can't be acquired otherwise" excuse cringy.

I emulate everything, because I want to. Because piracy is cool. Because I want the entire ROM set. I'll pirate everything, I don't give a shit, I don't have noble reasons. Intellectual property means nothing to me.

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 71 points 4 days ago

Refusing to respect intellectual property is a noble enough reason all on its own

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 31 points 4 days ago

Either reason is fine.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 26 points 4 days ago (1 children)

there are a whole shitload of lost films from early cinema and even TV shows as late as whatever doctor who episodes are missing

mainline pokemon isn't in danger of becoming lost media but a bunch of other stuff is or has been lost.

[–] Demifriend@hexbear.net 13 points 4 days ago

I don't think they are arguing against preservation though, they are criticizing a specific type of person who is opposed to unofficial emulation unless it's the only option. There are a shocking number of people out there who will avoid options that are both cheaper and higher quality than official means of playing games just because they respect IP rights.

Charging $20 for a 20+/- year old ROM file is wild.

Like holy shit, not even a remake or anything (I guess it wpuld be a remake of a remake?).

Pokemon Infinite Fusion is free.

Honestly one of the final nail in the coffin for me wanting anything to do with Nintendo was their shitty little ROM subscription service. Like not only are they charging you money for access to ancient ROMs, they have the gall to make it so you lose access the moment you stop paying. Gross. Obligatory "all games companies suck and do this." But man, fuck Nintendo. Pirate, emulate, fuck gaming companies. They've enshittified past the point of return now.

[–] booty@hexbear.net 26 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I was like wait, FireRed/LeafGreen is a remake, it's not...

Oh god this remake is a 20+ year old rom nl-despair

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 24 points 4 days ago (9 children)

I'm sorry kitty-cri

You want to get really mad? Look up how much a genuine copy of the original cart is going for now

Me playing romhacks which are just the original roms except with a single pixel changed in the title screen so I won't be called a pirate

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 17 points 4 days ago

There are some genuinely fantastic romhacks out there. Pokemon Unbound is good if you're looking for one.

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 11 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

If Nintendo is serious about getting my Pokémon FireRed rom off my phone they can take a page from Hasbro and hire the Pinkertons to pry it from my cold dead hands

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 50 points 4 days ago

wojak-nooo Noooo, piracy is hurting Nintendo!!

comfy-cool Piracy is hurting Nintendo!

(Nintendo made a debt slave out of Gary Bowser, so they're never seeing another fucking coin from me)

[–] save_vs_death@hexbear.net 45 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Emulation is currently being used to try & hurt Nintendo's revenue

damn, i wish it worked

[–] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago

I've downloaded and deleted the same rom 100 times, costing Nintendo an estimated $2,000. Once I automate this process, I can bring Nintendo's revenue into the negatives and tank Japan's economy.

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 38 points 4 days ago

My uncle works at nintendo and he said its okay to emulate their games

[–] save_vs_death@hexbear.net 35 points 4 days ago (1 children)

amazing this person posted about this like 100 times in the last 24 hours, lmao

They forgot the part where the product has to be worthwhile to buy like adding cool new features or quality of life improvements maybe even online multiplayer to make it worth buying. But no its gonna be the rom repackaged in a shitter emulator likely running entirely on stolen emulator code like everything else Nintendo has done. Does this dweeb forget Nintendo couldnt even be bothered to emulate their own games properly for the worthless switch online service?

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago

HGSS introduced the pokewalker at the very least

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 33 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Oh no, not Nintendo's revenue!

(I admit I have always loved Nintendo's games but that love applies solely to the creativity and skill of its laborers, not the profit-maximizing corporate entity)

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 25 points 4 days ago

The industry has been brutal to so many of the authors of my childhood. People who in cases spent crunch time away from their children for the benefit of stranger’s children only to get laid off the next quarter.

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 31 points 4 days ago

bootlicker “See Daddy Nintendo, I have defended the honor of your slop franchise riding on nostalgia! Please love me Daddy Nintendo!”

[–] Twongo@lemmy.ml 17 points 3 days ago

i wanted to comment "that's bait" but the user's twitter history proved me wrong... wow

[–] Dessa@hexbear.net 23 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Pokémon might be the rare exceptionnwhere emulation is missing a key feature, which is interoperability with other games in the series. You can't move your captured pokémon up the series to more recent games, unless that's changed since I last checked.

Even so, I'm not spending 20 on a game I don't get to keep forever. Fuck that

[–] vovchik_ilich@hexbear.net 17 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I'd bet my ass there are mods to "do this", as in, spawn whatever Pokémon you desire

[–] Goblinmancer@hexbear.net 17 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I used a save editor just to get alakazam. Screw you trade evolution mechanic

[–] SmithrunHills@hexbear.net 16 points 4 days ago (2 children)

trade evolution was a fucking mistake, and so is multiple version releases that arbitrarily split Pokemon availability. Love the series but greedy ass company and practices makes me never want to buy a Pokemon game proper

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

A lot of Japanese games made for handhelds seem to have features intended for people who live in walkable places with functional public transport. Outside of that context, shit just doesn't work right lol

In the crowds that I hang out with, paying for something when you can get it for free makes you a sucker.

[–] SmithrunHills@hexbear.net 16 points 4 days ago (3 children)

$20 for FRLG when you can literally downloads thousands of much better romhacks based on FRLG ALONE for free. And that's before mentioning all the Emerald romhacks, or even the rare Ruby/Sapphire ones.

Nintendo could literally release this for free on the NSO service, but because doing it this way gets them more money, this is what they decide on. It's not even like they released a FRLG remake with completely new features to justify the price lmao

[–] Moss@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Pokemon modders are incredibly hardworking and have so much love for the franchise. Nintendo are so unfathomably stupid and greedy for shutting them down as much as they can instead of working with them. Look at Pokemon Infinite Fusions, which has thousands upon thousands of unique sprites, or challenge ROM hacks like Run and Bun or Renegade Platinum. If Nintendo released the ds and earlier games for free and actively worked with modders, 100% they would make more money and bring more people to the franchise than their hostility to creators achieves.

I'm actually surprised Nintendo dropped the price at all. I went into an EB Games (Australian GameStop) in 2019 and found a brand new copy of Pokemon Black 2 for $59.95 in their singular Nintendo DS shelf (idk why they dedicated shelf space to it in 2019, but alas).

$59.95 is the exact same price as when it dropped in 2011.

I would also argue that making the older games easily accessible doesn't even get in the way of making money. Give away FRLG just like they do in the sites. Fuck, it. If you're brave, put the ROM on your website. Like if I'm a little kid who likes to play in the dort and I get my grubby little hands on a solid, simple entry in the pokemon series, then suddenly AI slop and mobile games feels hollow in comparison. I want to get into the paid versions. Once I have disposable income do you think I want Minecraft toys?! No! I want a Pikachu plushie. I want to fly to watch VGC and I use the hotel you partnered with and you got some revenue by attracting a larger crowd filled with people who preferred Pokemon compared to F2P mobile shit.

Being a cool company with a good product feels like it would be a competitive advantage. Especially if everyone else is a shitty fucking vampire 24/7

“Emulation is currently being used to try & hurt Nintendo’s revenue”

waow-based

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 18 points 4 days ago

i can already play that on my switch pirate-jammin

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 18 points 4 days ago (1 children)

But what if i take short position on nintendo stock, and then pirate their games think-about-it

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 16 points 4 days ago

that'd be a great plan if piracy actually did anything lol

[–] HuntressHimbo@lemmy.zip 16 points 4 days ago

But if they can't rent seek on the same games for a third time what will they do to fill their platinum bowls?
