Best case scenario this is to be able to claim "victory" soon. Because Iran removing any mines they've put in the Hormuz Strait - no matter how many or few - is something he will for sure get in any peace negotiation.
The mines narrative is completely fake. They're using drones and missiles to close the strait. What they're doing is saying that it's mines and showing themselves blowing up ships saying they're mine-laying ships. At the same time they're manipulating oil prices down, at least in the futures market by shorting it. Real shortages are happening and will be even more widespread soon.
