I didn't used to understand foreign involvement in wars. I still don't understand but I used to not understand too.

this is one of the propaganda lines that westerners have been fed about the war. some of the ones I can think of:

1. this war has been going on forever

2. this is a religious conflict

3. it's extremely complicated and ~nuanced~

for each one of these, the conclusion is "well, we can't really do anything about it, it's unsolvable". in reality, any reading of the history tells you that it hasn't been going on all that long, it has next to nothing to do with religion, and it's not complicated. Israel is clearly in the wrong, and there is a clear way to end the conflict practically overnight.

Except in this analogy somebody came into your sandbox, drew a little circle and said that's yours and the rest is mine, keeps knocking down the sandcastle you built in your circle for several decades and then when you got mad and knocked down one of his once your parents kill you.

Its physically painful that most people think like this. Then they point fingers and say that other countries use propaganda and their citizens are clueless about reality.

While my partner didn't have a brain dead take like this, I did have to give them a thorough explanation earlier on why the Israeli occupation is unacceptable and always will be until the settlement is removed. My partner is aware of some terrible policies and why those policies shouldn't exist, but hegemonic diasporas simply aren't on their radar. I'm just glad they're receptive and try to understand rather than falling prey for dumb hot takes like the screenshot above.
