If you are here asking: "Is this a science meme?"

Probably, yes. We use the Dawkins definition of meme: a replicating idea, not just an image macro with a fact on it. A good post here doesn't need to teach you something. It needs to make you ask something: who, what, where, when, and especially why or how.

Science isn't a filing cabinet of facts, it's a conversation. For example, a photo of an eel or other localized wildlife counts because most people never see one, and wonder is the first step of inquiry. A car meme counts if it makes you curious about what's under the bonnet. If you want to talk about something you noticed in the world, chances are someone else wants to talk about it too.

We moderate for vibe, not category. Pruning is light, especially where a post creates interesting discussion. Experimenting is encouraged.

See the pinned paper on Shitposting as Public Pedagogy if you want the academic case for why this works.

Ok but does it lack stripes, or does it have too many stripes?

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 4 points 9 hours ago

Or just a small number of really thick stripes.

Kruger National Park

"What's black and white and red all over, bitch??"

It occurs to me that that joke doesn't work as well as it used to since newspapers are much less widely read now.

"What's black and white and read by Boomers?"

The Bible? If you only read one passage at a time?

[–] Reborn_Mormon@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

[–] mal3oon@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago

That's a stealing look.

It just fueled the debate more. I don't see a lack of stripes, I see an oversized stripe.

Is the zebra black with white stripes, or gold with blue stripes?

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 2 points 12 minutes ago (1 children)

Ooh, I'd forgotten that one! I gotta add that to my "ask young people about memes before their time so I can feel even older" list

Shave a zebra and you'll find out

[–] Erusset@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 day ago

The stripes ran in the wash

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 79 points 1 day ago (6 children)

Zebras have black skin. They are black with white stripes.

[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 40 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's only big zebra propaganda

Their body is smaller but a newborn zebra foal's legs are almost as long as an adult's. This is to help them keep up and also to make it harder to spot them among the herd, as lions tend to target the young and infirm.

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 11 points 1 day ago

They're black with white and black stripes.

[–] cockmushroom@reddthat.com 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Are white people stripey, too?

[–] Enkrod@feddit.org 40 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

All humans are stripey, it's just that the lines are usually invisible.

NSFW

[–] Dearth@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think they're visible to certain wavelengths of light?

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

Defragmentation sponsored by Microsoft

[–] ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

You can tell it's real because after it's all said and done, it's still hella fragmented.

[–] FUCKING_CUNO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

[–] SPRUNTnsfw@fedinsfw.app 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Or is just a really bad cover up.

They had to get some stuff covered up from their time in the service

It's not just a phase moooom

[–] tomiant@piefed.world 11 points 1 day ago

It was time to try something new. I respect that.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 1 day ago

Neat, a lot of the time you just see pictures of zebras with funky coats as foals and not as adults, but this one looks pretty grown.

[–] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Sorry, i got distracted with my sharpie

[–] Kumikommunism@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago

Is the "generational debate" whether they are black with white stripes? Because that's been known for a long time.

[–] graycube@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

That is what happens when Mr Ed gets caught in the rain.
