I'm working through.a first-timer watch of DS9, and there was sexual tension within seconds of their first appearance. It's the only romance the show has given me so far that has any real chemistry.
Possibly because most others involved either Sisko who had "help me" in his eyes in every relevant scene or ancient mind leech. Oh and Grand Nagus and Quark's mom which was i guess pretty wholesome for a Ferengi standards.
The actors always wanted them to fall in love, but alas it was the 90s
Frakes wanted to kiss a gender ambiguous alien who presented masc but Berman said "nope, you can have blacks and whites working together but no one is gay in the future"
iirc they did kiss, Frakes' objection was that Berman was a coward for casting a woman for the enby alien instead of a man

He was married to an Emergency Medical Hologram of Julian Bashir from a different reality. He was also a former member of the Obsidian Order, but in his universe Garak had become a surgeon rather than a Deep Space 9 tailor after his spy career was over. (LD: "Fissure Quest")
Starfleet uniform was like 10 times more suspicious than being gay with Bashir because they did flirted for like half of DS9.

On the one hand, I'm glad that Bashir / Garak is finally canon, but on the other hand, I wish it were canonized in a piece of media that wasn't Lower Decks.
I mean it would be nice if it had happened on DS9 yeah but Lower Decks is legit the best Star Trek anything that has been released in like 30 years
