I believe that that's a harvestman actually. It is an arachnid but not a spider. They are suuuper ancient. The giveaway is that there isnt a visually distinguishable division between the prosoma (head region) and opisthosoma (back region) as there is in the spiders and other arachnids like the solifuges.

I think arachnids that aren't spiders scare me even more.

There’s no reason to be afraid of Opiliones. Their mouthparts are the wrong shape and too small to do harm to a human. Also, unlike spiders, there are no known Opiliones with venom. Their chelicerae are for grasping only.

This person opilionates 👌

Like sea spiders, which aren't even closely related s, but belong in the pycognids in the chilcerates, unusual because they respire through diffusion in their legs,

But... its head looks like a black bunny and its back looks like a greenish-yellow spider. Is that not a distinguishable division? 🤔 ^/s^

You can add two spaces at the end of each line to achieve line breaks

[–] frigidaphelion@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

I came here to say exactly this. Like, I wasn't perfectly sure, but I was pretty sure this was a harvestment not a spider.

Same family as 'Daddy Long Legs'? From my colloquial knowledge they eat mosquitos, so pay them no mind if your tent is crawling with them.

[–] frigidaphelion@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yep! "Daddy long legs" is a widely applied colloquial term for harvestman, or opiliones. Though I'm sure some spider species are also called that by some people.

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Given the colloquial meaning of daddy nowadays, that name tickles me greatly.

Is there a word for when something is both cute and terrifying?

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 23 points 1 month ago (3 children)

All spiders are little mechs to me! Their legs are powered by hydraulics!

[–] ToastedPlanet@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 1 month ago

Yes, but do they have little bunnies piloting them? bun, bunhdthink

[–] Nelots@lemm.ee 8 points 1 month ago

This is why Peni Parker is actually the most accurate spider-man

[–] AlecSadler@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

Which is honestly kind of freaky.

Can we standardize including info and/or better quality images when posting images with unusual/interesting animals, since this is the science based community?
