California national guards troops and marines deployed to Los Angeles to help restore order after days of protest against the Trump administration have told friends and family members they are deeply unhappy about the assignment and worry their only meaningful role will be as pawns in a political battle they do not want to join.

Three different advocacy organisations representing military families said they had heard from dozens of affected service members who expressed discomfort about being drawn into a domestic policing operation outside their normal field of operations. The groups said they have heard no countervailing opinions.

“The sentiment across the board right now is that deploying military force against our own communities isn’t the kind of national security we signed up for,” said Sarah Streyder of the Secure Families Initiative, which represents the interests of military spouses, children and veterans.

they felt like pawns in a political game and assignment was not necessary

That’s true of all U.S military assignments.

[–] Horse@lemmygrad.ml 60 points 1 month ago

yeah but this time they don't get to shoot foreigners

[–] robotElder2@hexbear.net 60 points 1 month ago

Now you feel like a pawn? What the fuck did these dumbasses think a soldier was? For that matter what did they think that the actual pawn in actual chess was meant to represent?

I'm imagining some old Vietnam veteran going all "Back in my day, when we weren't happy with where we were deployed, we FRAGGED our officers! These whiny kids want everything handed to them."

i mean legit if the military is just exclusively deployed to do stuff like this in the U.S. (doubtful with the Iran war possibly coming) we might actually see a lib Carnation Revolution at some point

no foreigners to murder, just being stuck in terrible conditions while a whole city of treats is just out of reach. it's like being home but not. and I know there are plenty of psychos who want nothing more then to die mothafucker die a .50 cal into a packed crowd of liberal boomers but we aren't quite the Imperium of Man yet and i can't imagine murdering their own neighbors (only to return to a cold floor) will go over well with the majority

either way, fragging is a thing. and more regretful, anti-imperialist former troops (that renounce their former career) with training and skills can't hurt a nascent leftist movement

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 27 points 1 month ago (1 children)

doubtful with the Iran war possibly coming

Honestly this war could potentially be used as a scotch tape measure to hold an angry country together, cause nothing sees greater bipartisan support than wars (against the global South; a war against a Western country would be treated as a grave crime because libs see Westerners as human beings)

they're weir 1 or 2 pre-Luigis in Q4 2024 by former troops, kind of surprised there hasn't been more since.

still following orders though

[–] anarchoilluminati@hexbear.net 47 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh, well, too bad they are enslaved and can't voluntarily leave this job and work at a school or grocery store to avoid having to oppress their own countrymen against their will. Such a shame, but at least they still get their fat checks and social benefits!

[–] PoY@lemmygrad.ml 37 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

i doubt the checks are even fat

[–] anarchoilluminati@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Fatter than people working the cash register at a grocery store though.

[–] Lyudmila@hexbear.net 32 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Not as fat as you'd think. Walmart wages scale about the same as pay for E-3s and E-4s, depending on the store and position. E-4 wages are like $18 an hour.

[–] buh@hexbear.net 31 points 1 month ago

sad, getting walmart shelf stocker wages for far less honorable work

[–] john_brown@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago (1 children)

walmart doesn't have barracks, yet

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 27 points 1 month ago (1 children)

yeah part of the deal is you're spending way less on housing and food so the wage goes further, which is how you afford the car financing.

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Gotta get dat camero somehow

[–] john_brown@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago (2 children)

They can't, Chevrolet has disrespected the troops: Chevy Camaro Axed after 2024

These fuckers are even more pathetic than I imagined.

They literally just enlist to SA and murder in exchange for social benefits. They make far less than I expected, and while that makes me happy it also makes me angrier these idiots wreck the world at the command of the wealthy in exchange for basic goods they would get in even better conditions if they just sided with working people. I know they also benefit from living in military housing, etc., but these people are just fucking pathetic.

Far more respect for any working person at a grocery store than these losers.

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

The only real benefit at that level is that you don't pay for food or rent in the barracks, so if you are disciplined and not addicted to sports betting, you can save all that money, which is why people blow it on a Camaro when they are 22, but then basically have nothing outside of that.

It's also why people in the military get married so young and divorced so often, as if you are married you get to have a little house on base with all your rent and food paid for, but once you make rank and can just live in a house, suddenly living with your wife who you always hated doesn't sound all that appealing any more.

So do something about it

[–] culpritus@hexbear.net 43 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Do any of these folks even know who Smedley Butler is? A military parade in DC is just such a fertile opportunity.

[–] Dirt_Possum@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago

For those here who may not know:

Related, if anyone here ever encounters any military people who might want out, point them here: https://girightshotline.org/

This group can coach and help them so they can find a way to leave without having their life ruined by their superiors.

thats what joining the military IS

being a pawn in the chess game!

[–] Ericthescruffy@hexbear.net 32 points 1 month ago

A lot of American soldiers, just like a lot of Americans otherwise, have main character syndrome.

There was a reddit post a while back from some troop who had regrets who really summed it up well saying: "When I enlisted I thought I was signing up to be Luke Skywalker. Instead I realized one day I was just another faceless Stormtrooper."

[–] D61@hexbear.net 33 points 1 month ago

... feel like a pawn...

Well then... pawns can take out kings. Do something funny. jokerfied

[–] dkr567@hexbear.net 31 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I guess crayon eaters are realizing they aren't in some foreign country shooting the inhabitants at will, also being nothing but a statistical data point.

[–] TheLastHero@hexbear.net 28 points 1 month ago

if you complain but do nothing you prove you are indeed just a bunch of losers and suckers a-little-trolling

[–] Tabitha@hexbear.net 27 points 1 month ago

surely there is someone out there who thinks the soldiers were given money therefor this is good for the economy????? very-intelligent

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 22 points 1 month ago

Demoralizing your soldiers is the sure firest way to end up in a coup situation.

So for sheer humor I keep Trump keeps doing it.
