Jokes on you, i use Dvorak touch typing so I have no idea what's actually printed on the keys since I never pay attention to it anyway. I would literally not notice at all if you swapped them.

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago

Jokes on you! I cracked open the keyboard and rewired the circuit so the scancodes are swapped!

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

But that's the joke. People will reverse the letters because they type without having to look.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 hours ago

How will they reverse the letters if they don't look?

When you swap keycaps, it doesn't change the electrical layout of the keyboard

[–] SupraMario@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I think like 99% of people who know how to type properly don't look at the keys. This is only gonna mess up the chicken pecking typers.

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 4 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I look often because I'm very good at missing the keys or pressing two of them at once

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 1 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

I do look at my keyboard once in a while to recenter my fingers, but I only get a general sense of the layout. Absolutely wouldn't notice two switched keycaps. On my laptop, I tend to feel for ridges on the F and J key instead of looking.

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

My keyboard is missing half the keys written on it and I still miss the right one lol im a lost cause

"Chicken pecking typers"

I nearly spat out my coffee.

[–] humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

In my office, we call them PMs.

Oh my god I'm so dumb. I was going to say aren't touch typers the only ones in danger? And had to think several times before I realized.

... As if this remaps the keys...

And I'm

  • a touch typer
  • with a mechanical keyboard
  • and a custom layout
  • that I remapped in firmware and software for my laptop keys

For touch types change J and H.

There is often a tactile cue.

[–] Cenzorrll@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

J-k would get me. J-h puts my hands too close and I'll notice. There's enough space to the right that I'll happily be super confused when I start tu[]omg ;ole tjos

[–] brian@lemmy.ca 30 points 2 days ago

I would definitively notice immediately. It would just feel.. wrong

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago

I admit, I do use the little nubbins occasionally.

You neam you mean innume

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 day ago

They don't have to be.

My roommate once got a keyboard with all blank key caps.

In order to punish his hubris I remapped m and n in the windows registry when he left his computer unlocked.

Good times.

The key is to not only do this, but also compile this quick autohotkey script to an exe, hide it on their computer, and set it to run at startup:

#NoTrayIcon

m::n
n::m

That way it’ll fuck with touch typers. And when they look down to confirm that something’s wrong, it won’t look wrong. It’ll drive them nuts!

[–] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What kind of clown company allows random employees to just compile random scripts and alter startup behavior of computers...and also, what kind of moron employee leaves their computer unattended and unlocked.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You'd be shocked to see what's allowed on many college campuses because no one wants to hear faculty bitch endlessly about it.

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 3 points 12 hours ago

The Dean needs to be able to run a random open-source 16-bit app from 1997 that hasn't been updated since it was released.

[–] Landless2029@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

Set it to startup only on April 1st

[–] The_v@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Non-destructice hijinks were highly encouraged at my first job. It was a way to encourage people to remember to lock up their computers when they stepped away.

So mouse button settings were often reversed, hotkeys were mapped, desktop backgrounds were modified, and basically every other non-destructive computer prank was pulled.

I worked in a Nac office. Everyome had am idemtical lookimg bluetooth 'nagic' nouse.

Ramdonly swappimg a few aroumd was always a great 'ice-breaker' for the begimming of a stressful day!

I remember it was a common prank in my office, for coworkers that didn't lock their workstations, to set their homepage to hampster-dance.

At a LAN party we once messed with a friend's desktop background. He had a picture of himself and a girlfriend in what I assume was his dorm room as his background. We wanted to take the poster in the background and photoshop it to something funny. Someone had a bizarre picture of a bunch of dudes in Ninja Turtle masks. One of them was holding some chick in a skirt upside down and I think holding a fist against her panties. That photo was so bizarre it sticks in my mind.

I have no idea if he ever realized it. I felt bad afterward when I found out he was MIA at the LAN Party because of an unpleasant medical issue...

My favorite was screenshotting the screen then moving their icons and taskbar to a second monitor that was not plugged in.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

You can also toggle icons off.

[–] Cliff@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Open a lot of windows and screenshot it for the new background picture. Was always funny to watch people desperately trying to close all the windows.

[–] The_v@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

My favorite was to take a screenshot of the desktop and set it as the background. Then put all of the icons into a folder. Most people I left the folder on the desktop. The IT guys, the folder was then hidden.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

You are the reason I use ls and cd instead of a foss file manager.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 24 points 1 day ago

If you do this, remember to change the keyboard layout to match.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 38 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I would never ever notice that.

[–] lobut@lemmy.ca 27 points 2 days ago (2 children)

My manager once swapped my coworker's keyboard to say "FUMICHAL" or something like that on the keyboard.

It was many weeks before my manager had to point it out to him that he did that. Since my coworker was a touch typer he just never noticed. I think my boss thought that since he was Polish that maybe he'd look down once in a while, but nope.

I don't think he ever changed it back because he just never thought it was worthwhile to do so.

[–] Ininewcrow@piefed.ca 15 points 1 day ago

The only keys I would ever notice being moved are 'F' and 'J' ... because they have that little nub to let your fingers know where to place your hands ... but even then, I usually just move my finger placement left or right until I find the right setup anyway.
