Oh, Albertans can leave Canada, alright… by emigrating through the border to America at the 49th parallel.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Why the fuck is there even a poll for this? Can you fucking please stop legitimizing trump bullshit and just arrest and jail Smith for treason?

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

So what the fuck is the deal with the referendum they have planned about whether Alberta should take control of who is allowed to immigrate there?? They've been bragging how there are no rats in Alberta so long, it's gone to their heads. I can't think of a province or state in the world that has those powers.

[–] Corngood@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 hour ago

I only just heard about this, but presumably she knows a sovereignty referendum will fail, so she's going to find something nobody will be strongly motivated to vote against, but which will still cause constitutional conflict she can exploit to further the separatist cause.

Normal traitor stuff.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 27 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Alberta stays. The traitor separatists can fuck off to the US.

[–] lobut@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 hours ago

I'll willing to pool some money to ship them straight into an ICE detention centre in the US where they want to be.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

I was hoping for some kind of like-for-like trade. US gets Alberta. Canada gets Minnesota.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 hours ago

thats a great deal

The most left wing states are further right than any Canadian province.

[–] CanadaPlus 4 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

[Laughs in Bernie Sanders]

Like, sure, some portion of blue states vote red, because there's no credible third option. Other than that there's no real grounds for this.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Bernie would be a right winger in Canada.

Which of his policies have we exceeded? His medical plan included dental care, which we still don't have for everyone. We have no wealth tax. We're car-centric. It goes on.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Brother, how many times did Toronto elect Rob Ford?

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 6 points 7 hours ago

Same as Ontario electing Drug Fraud multiple times.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 3 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

That’s because the T. is a shithole.

[–] CanadaPlus 9 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

The interesting thing is that that's pretty close to the numbers in Alberta itself.

[–] voluble@lemmy.ca 8 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Another example of the fact that 20-30% of people are totally irrational, and this demographic is well distributed and not region specific.

[–] CanadaPlus 4 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

Yeah, maybe. I have to wonder if there's an element of "kick them out" in there as well.

[–] voluble@lemmy.ca 5 points 6 hours ago

Could be. I think that would be unfortunate. AB's provincial government has gone rogue, and there is a very vocal minority of crazy people. The majority of Albertans are rational, reasonable people and the province has a lot to offer Canada.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 hours ago

that's my opinion. All Alberta does for Canada is produce christofascist politicians

[–] Omega_Jimes@lemmy.ca 9 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I keep hearing from separatists how popular the idea is, but I've only ever seen one or two people at a folding table on their phone.

[–] CanadaPlus 7 points 7 hours ago

Ah, but by only talking to each other, they can get the apparent rate close to 100%.

Literally what seems to be happening, including in the legislature.

If tariffs come in and Canada attempts to use oil as leverage against the US after they blocked a pipeline east and west I could see Albertans being angry.

They want to exploit the oil, for leverage and equalization, while providing none of the support for it. Separation at least gives Alberta a bargaining chip for concessions, this is peoples livelihood after all.

[–] lemonySplit@lemmy.ca 8 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

They've had EVERY opportunity to diversify. Fuck their livelihoods

[–] CanadaPlus 6 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

We've kinda earned that, yeah. For example, Norway's sovereign wealth was inspired by ours. It's now the biggest investor in the world, while the Heritage Fund was periodically emptied out to save whatever politician's job.

In our defence, it's not different from Newfoundland and the cod fishery. People are dumb and shortsighted everywhere.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 5 points 7 hours ago

Too bad the heritage fund was squandered for blatant political purposes, rather than being used for its intended purpose.
